I say that to make a point about wood conditioning - I'm working on controls right now for what we are affectionately dubbing "MegaKilns" - it's such a crucial part to get right when it comes to instruments, but anyone starting out with wood working, should first set up their spot where they should store their wood. For years I would just stack it in a corner or something. Working with flat, acclimated wood is a lot nicer

example:

I refinished some butcher block countertops in my house using a card-scraper set that I had to sharpen and burnish by hand. I got great results using the scraper to remove the layers of poly and damage/staining and get a nice clean surface that just needed some light going over with an orbital sander before finishing with 2 coats of hard wax-oil.

I really enjoyed the process of using the scraper and the wax oil still looks great and is providing a tough finish after 8 months.

Nothing like hand cutting joints, but I could see myself enjoying this hobby as I get older.

That ebony is beautiful! My newest guitar has an ebony fretboard, my first one, and it's a dream, feels so nice.

My own woodworking is limited to making super simple racks for studio gear from shitty Home Depot pine, but my brother has made some seriously nice stuff.

The first half dozen guitars I built were all variations on the same design. All with slight changes, tweaks, different materials etc... but the general body shape and sound was the same. It's a design I love and have built a few more like it since the earliest ones. My first paying customer was my friend Chris Brokaw who got one of the early ones. Last year someone played his and got in touch asking if I could make a copy of it. I keep pretty detailed notes so I said I'd do it and just finished it up today. I'm really happy with how it came out and building it was kind of like revisiting an old friend.

That is a beauty!

I use lacquer or shellac. This one is shellac. I actually brush on the first bunch of coats and then french polish from there. If it was going to someone who was going to be touring or heavily gigging or something like that, I would also do a few coats of lacquer over the shellac although I've found that if you give it enough time between the final coats and final sanding/buffing, it's a durable finish and I love how it sounds.
