I have many reasons to hate Pantera, ignorance and racism being two, and a bunch of wack tunes being another. They're irredeemable as people, but as musicians they get a pass for Vulgar Display of Power. Kind of like How Bad Brains put out a bunch of wank but will always get a pass for the ROIR tape. I will not extend such a pass to Alice In Chains because that stuff takes me back to when every major label band was repackaged as "grunge" and I had to hear that guy's stupid heroin yarl and look at his fuckin' junkie abs. They are head to head with Stone Temple Pilots for the most annoyingest self-indulgent shite, though I think Scott Weiland has a "better" voice than Layne Styaylyey.

Alice In Chains had “Would,” which I love, and “Dem Bones,” which I like on the right day.

Can’t stand Pantera in any of their phases. Also: the racism.

I confess that I've always loved Pantera, but I've always found them funny. It's good, it's supposed to be serious, but it's accidentally funny. Listening to Pantera reminds me of watching Terminator 2.

Alice in Chains cranks the accidental comedy down several ticks. Still, you can't help but echo Stanley's drawl on some lines and chuckling. "Yeahrrr".

Am I the only one fascinated by the insight behind the thread: the two bands have many musical similarities which I've never noticed only because in their time they represented distinct sub cultures.

The Pantera guys always gave off the impression that if they were my age in adolescence they might be the sort to fuck with me for being gawky. Maybe that's terribly unfair, but there's a machismo there I don't get from AIC.

I know Dime used a wah in his set up from the early days until the end (ditto mxr flangers), but a lot of his more characteristics squeals are coming from digitec whammy pedals.

Obvs we're entering into subjective realms here but I wouldn't say his wah playing is one of his biggest factors as a player - I'd say Dean guitars, Randel solid state amps and whammy pedals. Cantrell uses wah way more, to the point it's a sonic calling card for him.

This right here for me. As a teenager I worked at a shitty buffet restaurant, and I as a skate punk working alongside a bunch of heshers, found common ground with Pantera. It was heavy, aggressive and got us pumped up to jam on the mountains of dishes that came through that disgusting kitchen. The cassettes of Cowboys from Hell and Vulgar Display with always be hilarious, Beavis and Butthead in real life, nostalgia for me.

Obviously, Phil is a numbskull.

AIC-I always hated the sound of their music. Seemed like Grunge Ratt to me. Wah, chorus, yarling. Probably would have liked them better if the production wasn't so cheesed out.

I already made my serious comment. This was my humorous one. Diamond Darrell wasn’t as bad a wah abuser as Jerry Cantrell. But I’m also basing this on some real shit. There was a lot of late 80s early 90s wah pedal that was supposed to sound sinister. Skid Row tried it too. It didn’t age well. It sounds dumb and corny.

You don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about, class wise. You’re the one aggressively not getting the joke here. When you post a crap/not crap about cock rock bands that changed their image in the 90s, you’re guaranteed to get a lot of comments about how both are crap. Not my fault you stepped in shit.

You should have been honest and thrown Motley Crue in there. Their 1994 album was an attempt at the same thing, it just wasn’t successful.

Both bands I listened'm a lot in my early teens. Now I find them shitty. Some AIC I still enjoy though.

I don't disagree with most of this, but remember, they BOTH have signature wah pedals. There's no Dime signature Whammy, though there probably should be.
