I believe Pantera acknowleged their whole aggro schtick was influenced directly by how they thought Metallica had let everybody down with the Black album.

haha, yes! All the '90s cliches are there: tight popping snare and tiny rack tom, hibachi grill hi hats, splash cymbals.. it's like they brought in the Pearl Jam guy to play on it.

Pretty icky direct acoustic-electric guitar too, and yarling of course, but other than all that a not terrible song!

AIC's drum fills always had this drum-falling-down-a-flight-of-stairs syncopation to my ears; just off the beat enough to not be square but not funky enough to get that "OH yeah" out of it. And yeah, tiny splashes and thwock snare to boot. And DI box acoustic guit that almost sounds like a synth Clavinet setting.

I never liked 'Jar of Flies' and I think that acoustic-electric sound was the main reason.

Never got into Pantera for whatever reason. Maybe all the cowboy shit, but normally that doesn't bother me... Walkie-talkie guitar tones?
I loved Dirt when it came out, but quickly grew away from it.

With no waffles, Alice in Chains gets my vote for their 95 self-titled album.
Cool production with some really intense studio written tracks. Fantastic album.

Never liked Pantera, unless it's a De Tomaso.

AiC by a smidge. First record is mostly bad garbage, but some decent stuff on Dirt and S/T. First time I ever smoked weed was in 9th grade in a dude named Emil's bedroom on Halloween, while eating candy and listening to that S/T record on repeat. I do genuinely like how Layne and Jerry's voices blend together and harmonize, easily the best thing they had going for them.

The worst, most meathead dudes I've ever known have always loved Pantera. I know some decent people who love 'em as well, but between that association, Anselmo's racism, the bros TX strip club aesthetic...yeah, not my thing.

Faith No More's Angel Dust split the difference between the two in many ways.
