the first one is a "no baffle" speaker. There have been other designs like this. the idea is there is no box, and no baffle that the speakers are mounted in, so the sound can radiate in a more natural way for better imaging, phase coherence, etc.

the second one is a horn midrange with a ribbon tweeter tacked on the side, and a small woofer on the other side. totally freaky, but again, there are dozens of variations on the horn loaded drivers - they are usually very efficient and some people love them.

both of these were shown at Axpona. I love audio shows.

My Dad gave me his turntable, it's a JVC L-A21. It needs a new stylus. Is there one you all would recommend for an older model like this? Wanting to spend $100 or less.

Also, is there a trusted online place (besides Amazon) where you can go to buy replacement parts like these?

Less than $100.. for a cartridge + stylus, or just a stylus for the (unspecified) cartridge that you currently have?

At the sub-$100 price point, I feel that Audio-Technica makes a solid cartridge. This one here: https://www.audio-technica.com/en-us/ca ... t/at-vm95e

Aside from Amazon, I've had good experience with Turntable Lab: https://www.turntablelab.com/

There are folks on here way more knowledgeable on this topic than me, so definitely listen to their suggestions.

Since Needle Doctor closed up shop I've used turntableneedles.com

They have a cartridge that is recommended as a direct replacement for your JVC, looks like an OEM AT-91. Only $43!

You'll likely be wanting a nice Audio Technica cartridge at that price. For the money they are the best sounding and best tracking budget cartridges. (I hate Grados)

If the table is belt drive (which I believe it is) and it has not been used for a while, you might want to replace the belt.

If I were to go this route, which model should I look for?
