"massive" was a bit of an over statement on my part - probably compared to those hot-spots, sure yeah ok. Normal 12" drivers is what I used most likely. The point for me though was that with the huge thick curtains and much higher ceiling....performing with those monitors felt maybe more like being outside & what you heard primarily was coming from the speaker itself and any reverberation sounded natural and fine as opposed to the overall smear I'm used to hearing playing in less-than-perfect spaces.

24x24 is a pretty big room. You could get the monitors at a good distance from you. Maybe look at a 3 way design if you have the scratch. Like a Neumann KH 310 or something. They sound great, but imo you need to be at least 6 feet away from anything 3 way. I have a friend that has KH 310's sitting on his desk about 3 feet from his head in a small (sub 10x10) bedroom. He claims to use them for mastering. He likes to spend money and I think he choose poorly. You could even look at something like a good quality HIFI monitor like a ATC SCM35, or like the B&W speakers people around here seem to like so much. You will need a good amp as well.
