Re: Good, lesser known horror movies
72Nightmare fuel. Anxiety driver. Pure dread. Absolutely chilling. This horror short features a character who wakes-up bloodied and broken on a severe freakish curve and her attempts to survive. Deeply visceral and highly recommended.

74I just watched 964 Pinocchio at someone's recommendation. Fans of Tetsuo should enjoy it.

75I've watched this movie three times and haven't grown tired of it. Terrifying and bleak. It has a heavy, dire atmosphere that remains consistent and oppressive. That said, I can do with never having to see a ghost Jacob's Ladder-convulse ever again. The very few jump scares it had weren't too annoying, but they were unnecessary. Looking forward to what Bryan Bertino does next. I dug The Strangers, but its sequel didn't excite me as much.Bluegum LaBloat wrote: Mon May 23, 2022 12:54 pm The Dark and the Wicked.
Pure genre spookies with an oppressive, pessimistic mood, can't go wrong.
If anyone's interested in an exercise in extreme and transgressive horror, then The Sadness should push those buttons. A mutating virus (yeah) turns Taiwanese citizens into sadistic torturers, murderers, and rapists. Anything and everything, so, you know, you are now warned. It's a wild, wild ride. I did grow a little bored with all of the carnage and assault, but the practical effects are magnificent, and I did want to see how far it would go. I'm pretty sure there's a Salo easter egg therein. I'm a fan of the found footage genre. If you are too, then give Shudder's most recent documentary a looksie. It covers a lot, but there will always be misses in the eyes of genre fans. I was happy enough it gave a nod to Lake Mungo, though it failed to secure its elusive director, instead having iirc the director of photography sit for a spell. Gave a lot of time to Megan is Missing, which is obscure and extreme. One of a very few slew of movies where I had to step away for a bit, which is odd because I got through the vileness of Chaos no problem. Boy, oh boy, did Roger Ebert hate Chaos. Anyway, found footage fans should like this doc.
EDIT: I hate The Poughkeepsie Tapes tho. What a load of crap. Don't get the love for it.

Re: Good, lesser known horror movies
78This movie is insane. I watched it last Wednesday and probably shouted "HOLY SHIT" like 5 times. Not for the faint of heart, but cartoonish enough.rsmurphy wrote: Mon May 23, 2022 7:14 pm If anyone's interested in an exercise in extreme and transgressive horror, then The Sadness should push those buttons. Decent Dutch/English folk horror trip. The scenery and atmosphere is amazing due to the protagonists living at the edge of a peat bog. Proper horror. Intense from the jump. Bit of a shift in tone threw me off in the middle, but it got back there. Recommended. Not the best of this type, but it's supremely watchable if'n you're looking to get scared.
