The difference is that the C64 disk drive has almost as much computer in it as the main machine. Other 8 bit computer manufacturers managed to build disk drive controllers with more modest hardware requirements, but for all that... like I say, the C64 disk drive is AMAZINGLY slow at reading disks, even by the standards of the time. It's quite remarkable.
It was faster than the cassette drive (Datasette). I had both.

I feel like I've probably brought too much c64 to the cool shit thread but despite its flaws (and it has a few, including a propensity to blow itself up), the c64 is still cool shit 40 years on. And I actually do have a c64 set up here and I use that fucker in the nowadays.

It is wild how active the c64 scene is today. There is new stuff coming out for it all the time.
