Re: Songs that Make You Cry

One of my favorite to bands to have ever shared a stage (or rec hall or suburban garage floor) with. Joel, Matt, Zach, and Bob asking my old band to share bills with them meant a lot, and we even crashed at Matt's place when we played in Iowa City. Was crushed after Matt passed, and this one brings me back there.

Saw them play this live right around the time I lost an Aunt to alcoholism. Something that conjures up feelings of childhood, loss, but also a sense of there being more to the world is a very potent mixture.

Spent my 20's working at a movie theater. We used to screen assembled prints after hours to check for defects, and I was at the bottom of the hill for screener choices when I worked the projection booth. When something cool was opening you'd have a bunch of staff and friends hanging out, but I usually got paid to watch really mediocre things by myself. That included 2004's remake of Shall We Dance . Wasn't expecting to be blind sided by Peter Gabriel covering Magnetic Fields during the climax.

I'm not a tough cry. I recall waking up to my clock radio alarm in Junior High in tears once or twice. Once was to a Counting Crows song, but I believe that was more about some distant dream I was coming out of. Lately it's been any movie or tv show with a climactic touching family moment.

'tis the season

Mom, who now resides in the graveyard, would play this song endlessly while traipsing about the house decorating and cooking. I become verklempt just by looking at the record label.

Local art house theater is showing Cooley High this weekend. It made me think of the song that's played over the funeral scene. I hear the surface noise of the 45 played on the parental units record player. Makes me misty.
