The Ones That Got Away

I missed out on something the other day that just keeps gnawing at me. This showed up at my local Music Go Round. I was able to find a listing for the exact same bass when it sold on Reverb in 2020;

https://reverb.com/item/33343532-rescue ... _sold=true

It had different pickups and a gold ano pickguard, but it was $350 and couldn't have been more perfect for me. I love Japanese instruments (and music and movies and design, etc.) from the 70s. I love well loved, cobbled together instruments. This was pieced together and set up by a pro (if odd) dude from Japan Bass Direct. Looked totally solid and legit. I've been looking for a full scale bass for years (or the parts to make one) but I've been plagued by neck issues, so I was holding out for something special. This was something special. I went to the store as soon as I could the day it went up on the website. Like 10 minutes after they opened. I was 5 minutes late. Alas, Fresher Personal Bass, you slipped away.

I have one of those old solid brass bridges with the huge blocky saddles I was gonna put on it. Oh well. I'd still play just as bad on that bass as I do on my short scale. I've missed out on tons of stuff over the decades, this thing just seemed like it was made for me.

Ludwig Vista kit in Blue, in nice shape:
(2) 26" kick drums
something like 6/8/10/12/13/14/15/16 toms, and at least the 12"+ were double headed
18" and 20"!!! floor toms, maybe a 16" too?
Snare drum

Price: $300 for the whole shebang
Late 90s my band was playing with the Dismemberment Plan at.....Sir Morgan's Cove??? in lovely Worcester. We show up and the local openers are setting up onstage. I swear the drummer had this kit, I just remember the comical amount of toms.

We assumed any dude with the commitment to lugging a kit that big around was gonna put on a display, so we hurried to eat at the pizza place across the street and get back in time to catch their set.

He went boom bap boom boom bap digga digga digga digga all night.

Yeah I remember Sir Morgan's Cove. That's crazy that kit made it on stage in its full glory, even if it was underutilized.

I bought a broken Garnet Pro from a guy - while I was there he had a working BTO he'ed give me for $600, I thought why would I want a working amp when I could get a broke one for $100. I wasn't a sucker, nice try buddy.

Or Traynors by the truckload, especially the TS's all day long into my 20s for $200 or less

Similarly, I passed on a TB2000 in ~2000 for like $650. Sad thing is, I probably would have sold it for not much more soon after when I realized it wasnt so much my bag.
