This is good advice.

My parents gave me a solid introduction to classic rock when I was small, and did not intervene when I was 13 as I got on with listening to Guns ‘n’ Roses, Skid Row and other hair metal horrors. Grunge did the honours for me, and I’m convinced that our ears lead us to where we’re happiest.

Huh. Yeah, raised on a steady diet of full-blown music-nerd shit for sure. We have a good relationship, but he probably sees me as an arrogant hipster. And if some of what he's into now is a reaction against that? Makes sense.

When I was 13 I loved Huey Lewis & the News. Eventually I got curious about other kinds of music & other musicians & I stopped listening to Huey Lewis & the News.

If my father had told me to listen to a certain band when I was 13 I would have reacted as if he asked me to eat toxic waste.

Edit: Actually I suppose that isn't exactly true, when I was 14 my dad told me I should listen to Neil Young after he had seen him on SNL, but he didn't like Neil Young, he was recommending it to me becuz he thought it was bad in the way he though the rest of the stuff I liked was bad. And he was right.

In addition to the aforementioned Stiff/Chiswick bands, I'll add the Whole Wide World comp by Wreckless Eric. Also, Special View by The Only Ones.

I never liked Huey Lewis, so I can't say what results may come.
