Re: What are you buying, What's on its way?
391yeah, great score twelvepoint! in case those pickups don't work anymore, I'm pretty sure EGC has/makes them. I own a Squier Tele baritone with EGC neck and those Travis Bean pickups!
So the deal is the caps are orange but not labeled Sprague. The volume pots have caps on them as well (maybe for noise??), so there are 4 inside the cavity. PU wires are white with yellow stripes but the bridge PU has a 3" piece of black lamp cord wire scarfed in, which is a red flag!Tom Wanderer wrote: Thu Jul 07, 2022 11:24 am The copper shielding was probably not original, so the electronics were most likely removed for painting and could have been modified or something. Does it still have the Sprague orange drops and white wire with yellow stripe? Have you taken an approximate reading of each pickup resistance? If it was taken apart, it's possible they were swapped at some time.
Thanks for all the advice. I have some luthiers here (greater Boston) who are really good and I think I'll have a local person cut a new nut and do a fret dress. Obviously the pickup thing is the big issue, and I reached out to Electrical, who can get me a replacement and possibly do a repair. I definitely want to get the original fixed but if it's a 12 month wait, I may get a new one to use til the original is fixed. I did pull out that pup (which convinced me the issue is not in the wiring) and it looks like there's clear silicone holding the cover on, but maybe it's wax? It's soft and definitely not epoxy. I didn't want to mess with it any more than that.Tom Wanderer wrote: Fri Jul 08, 2022 8:20 am Totally worth doing whatever it takes to get that guitar in the shape you want it to be in. You want to pick it up and be pumped, not focus on the flaws. I'm assuming you have a guitar guy or gal that you trust for repairs? Get a new brass nut cut that lets you feel comfortable on the fretboard. That pickup...the fact that you're getting a measurement an not an open line or no resistance is probably a good thing (although a short to ground would have been easiest). I'd take the whole guitar in to your trusted repair person, let them know what's up, and see what they have to say. It might be as simple as a rewiring mistake somewhere in the past. Even if it does need a rewind, having the original bobbin and slugs and cover and everything is great for keeping it as original as possible and also keeping the price down. It's not epoxy potted, right? I'm pretty sure I've seen rewound TB humbuckers.
And the 4 orange caps are the correct amount for your guitar. No monkey business there.
