There are examples of stellar early records where nothing since quite reached the same heights. I've heard people come up with sound reasonings why, like "they were young and hungry, then they got old and comfortable", and similar, but there are so many examples of the contrary that it doesn't really hold as a principle. Neurosis, Coil, The Ex, they shined brighter as time went on. Vespertine is the best Björk album. Killing Joke had a magnificent opening, took a dip in the middle, came back big time. Mid-period The Cure is the only I've cared about. Skinny Puppy started at the top and kept it going (although admittedly has been garbage post-reunion). Kraftwerk - no comment needed. Ditto the Beatles. So on.

Some actual examples I can think of:
Autechre has never topped Incunabula.
Hüsker Dü beyond New Day Rising kinda lost it.
Show No Mercy is one of my favourite metal records, everything after holds much less value to me.

Baited, lol! Could not disagree more. Mentally flipping through the chronology and EP7 is probably the first record afterward that I’d rate lower than Incunabula. I am including all the EPs in that, too. Tri Rep is one of my favorite records, period.

We agree on all the artists you mentioned that got better over time, though.

It’d be interesting to try to break down why people have different tastes in terms of preferring stasis or evolution in specific artists. For example, I am happy with wherever Neurosis decides to go, but I probably wouldn’t give Converge as much leeway.

One does not really need any of the Def Leppard albums after High 'n' Dry.

I wouldn't go that far either! But people who say 'Pink Flag' is their only good record are basically Republicans.
It's hard because you can hear how they did something so specific with Pink Flag. They were smart, you couldn't one up something of it's ilk. Instead they found new frontiers.
