I guess I shouldn't be surprised but it's easy to assume Americans know this because everybody else fucking knows this. Did we know that inflation was affecting countries all over? Yes we did know. How could we not know? Do Americans think it's just them?

When the US right-wingers started pushing all that business about the pandemic being a hoax to swing the election... I mean that conspiracy theory only works if the rest of the world literally doesn't exist and nothing is happening anywhere else. So we're going to blame Biden for global oil prices now? Sure, why not that too. Why would the other 96% of the planet have anything to do with anything?

This is what happens when you call a national competition the World Series.

I'll never tire of watching "the most sophisticated electorate in the world" (aka the parliamentary tory party, according to parliamentary tory party) reveal this phrase to mean: a bunch of immoral backstabbers getting so drunk on plotting and assassination that they almost invariably end up with the candidate none of them wanted.

This time the right have offered quite a number of swivel-eyed loons who keep spewing phrases they've learned from the internet - "wokeness", "cancel culture", "cultural marxism" - that are pretty meaningless to most regular tories. And they're now panicking that their candidates aren't doing well and have decided to transparently wage war on someone who might be their best chance of winning the next election.

So sit back an enjoy "the most sophisticated electorate in the world" working very hard to lose the next election.

I love that island.
I disagree. Why is a state rep playing ambassador to another country, don't we have departments for that? Doesn't seem like the right thing to do at all.
She’s the speaker and is second in line to be president.

The other departments have no one with that kind of power or profile.

Plus she was in Asia anyway.

I guess we could have sent the president or vice president… on second thought, I think I am fine with Pelosi.

IMO, second in line to be president is not a good reason for an official visit w/ delegation. She has no power wrt another country except maybe to pass legislation aiding said country.

Have we ever sent the Speaker of the House to another country in a situation with such hostility?

Seems like a provocation to me.

^ I've mentally been on both sides of this argument since the prospect of the visit was news.

How do you support a fledgling independent, democratic nation who's trying to resist the number two global super power? I wrestle with being a dove but not an isolationist.
