There are many melodic themes in contemporary EDM music that I feel like one could work with on a similar pattern.
Yeah I understand and sympathize with this criticism, because they were so good at writing interesting harmonic stuff - “corc”, “rae”, “cichli”, all of the Garbage EP, etc. I think they just got bored of doing that sort of thing, which, I can’t blame them. I thought Confield was the turning point where they got significantly more abstract and less melodic. They still do it sometimes, it’s just buried under tons of toilet noise. The last tracks on NTS 4 and SIGN are both good examples of that, I think.

Personally, here is my Slayer ranking. South of Heaven > Reign in Blood > Seasons in the Abyss > big jump > Show No Mercy > Hell Awaits > Haunting the Chapel. I won't weigh in on the rest. I don't think Show No Mercy is recorded that badly, but the mix/production isn't great. I just relistened. Sounds better than I remember it. It's fine but I'd love to get rid of that reverb. Sounds like early Judas Priest. I just don't think the songs are there yet. Die by the Sword is cool.

As for Def Leppard... there is no reason to own anything but High N Dry and Pyromania. Period.

The top of the second tier of US thrash bands is relevant here.

The proof: Exodus has a very different vibe on the first one, largely due to Paul Baloff. I personally can’t do the Steve Souza stuff.

The exception: Overkill did two good but not great speed metal albums before really finding their niche. Under the Influence and Years of Decay are where they really fired on all cylinders. Later stuff isn’t as unified in its vision, despite being well put together for the most part.
