Absolutely the most important post-war filmmaker. Love pretty much all the 60s work, but really only know a handful of the others. Will definitely have to dig in w/ what's on the Criterion Channel.

As much as I love Truffaut's first three films, there's really no way you can compare the impact and stature Godard had in comparison. I mean, Godard totally comes off like a complete prick in those early 70s letters when they had their last falling out, but he was the greater artist.

I don't celebrate death, but there are some I won't mourn. Dude went from persecuting ML to overseeing a "Christian" university scandal where they tried to cover up rape and murder in the name of athletics. And he continued to find work after both atrocities. He was a total fuck.

The films I've seen by him are a mixed bag, but almost all are memorable in some way.
I think so., but he did a lot of stuff that never got popular and it's all pretty great. I like the way he plays with diagetic and non-diagetic sound, Something almost nobody dares do. It's one thing to jump cut a shot of a conversation, but Jump cut a Mozart symphony? Pretty daring.

for instance...this is a pretty nutty trailer to begin with, but just to focus on something small, then he lists his cast by last name only, and lists Women and Men. It's all very playful and unbound, but every one of his films has something "new" but still dead simple.
