Another good one is the confusion between the words equality and equity. The Yeoman Ghost wrote: Tue Apr 26, 2022 7:21 pmTwenty years ago, I used to die inside, just a little, when I would hear “impact” used as a verb in lieu of “affect”. Now we appear to be permanently saddled with abominations like “impactfulness,” the reality of which makes me appreciative of the fact that my time on this earth is finite.kokorodoko wrote: Sun Apr 24, 2022 1:49 pm A minor thing, but it annoys me by how "critique" has become a synonym for "criticism". A critique is a critical examination of something, not a chastisement. Criticism can be the former, but is exclusively the latter. I know this is common for language evolution and not much I can do about, but seeing this or that person being "critiqued" every day makes me sigh a little.
Similar with "discourse", which is worse because it is so strongly tied to certain theoretical fields - and having a more precise meaning in those - but still being used in place of "discussion", mostly I assume by people who are all familiar at least to some extent with the mentioned kinds of meaning and not by anybody who isn't. "We're having a good discourse". Ugh.
Boy I sure love this widespread lexicon shift that is taking place.
I'm learning every day that words I thought I knew the meaning of have fundamentally changed!
"Violence" is another good one.
