I don't see why not. I've tried mine all over. Just never really been that into it. I've replaces the stupid clamp clip twice and its missing again somehow so I almost never use it anymore.Mickey242 wrote: Mon Sep 12, 2022 8:22 pmWould you ever use a Re-20 under a snare?Kniferide wrote: Sat Sep 10, 2022 3:07 am I traded an m88 for a re20 about 15 years ago and always regretted it. Always found the re20 to not be worth the hassle of trying to keep a clip on it. They sound fine but honestly never in a wY that made me prefer it over Evan a 57 or another decent t dynamic. Then the foam became an issue I switched it our and the re20 even sounded less fun. I just bought another m88 to go back to and if I had to choose between the two ... m88 all day every day.
Aside, re20 is way too big for snare which is ironically probably where it is best suited. I can't figure these mics out.
Re: RE20 vs SM7B vs. something else
22These are new-ish and kinda interesting. It's marketed as a podcast mic, and has -3dB at 80 and 16kHz, so it's not for everything, but it does exist in that RE20/SM7 market and I wonder if it might have a place on drums (maybe not kick), guitar, vox? Nicely priced at $100.

Re: RE20 vs SM7B vs. something else
23Looks like a competitor to the AKG P4 or D40. I have a P4 for utility duty and it works pretty well. Wouldn't use it on kick, but it works great on guitar and bass cabs.
Re: RE20 vs SM7B vs. something else
24Good to know, thanks. I'm vaguely looking for a couple utility dynamic mics that sound decent on toms. I'm sure there are half a dozen prosumer mics that would work just fine.Nate Dort wrote: Tue Sep 20, 2022 12:27 pm Looks like a competitor to the AKG P4 or D40. 25Don't sleep on the PreSonus PD-70. They're the same price as the AT2040 but have an SM7b form factor, i.e. removable windscreen for non-vocal use.twelvepoint wrote: Tue Sep 20, 2022 1:29 pmGood to know, thanks. Re: RE20 vs SM7B vs. something else
26RE20 is a go-to bass and kick mic for me. I use it all the time on my vocals at home, esp. louder stuff. It is a little cumbersome, true. It is designed to have rather little proximity effect, which I like because the low end response is quite even and predictable. There's a lot of low end, if not as much as the Beyer M380 (most low end I've ever heard in a mic, lots of proximity effect as well--just really really deep bass and awesome in certain applications).
M88 great mic, less prodigious "natural" lows than the RE20. However, it has a pronounced proximity effect that you may or may not find useful. I find it pretty useful when I need to use it--it's good as the "meat" mic on baritone guitar. Better on regular guitar than the RE20, but I don't like it as much on bass or kick. I use mine for vocals at practice all the time.
SM7B, I've never loved it. I have picky friends who swear by it as a vocal mic. I think it's just not a great match for my voice and I have too many other mics I like on various instruments.

Re: RE20 vs SM7B vs. something else
27I like and have repped the SM7B but I think it's circled around to being an overrated mic. I bought one years ago for my own use but sold it once I had an M88 and RE20 around.
At this point if I'm putting a dynamic mic on a source (for recording, not live sound which I don't even do) it's probably only going to be an Electro-Voice "Variable-D" mic or an omni mic. Not really a moral stance, just a groove I've gotten into. Last time I tracked drums I went M88 and a Beyer M80-something on toms and really liked it. But the album I'm tracking right away is three condenser mics on the drum kit, RE-20 on bass cab, and EV 635a on guitar combo.
Have Heil Mics come up in the thread yet? I don't have direct experience, they're not as common in western Canada, but I feel like they would fit the bill here.

Agreed. They're pretty cool on guitar cabs, but so are all the other options mentioned here and those are all more versatile.Mason wrote: I like and have repped the SM7B but I think it's circled around to being an overrated mic.
Pretty much 75% of records I've been on used M88s for vocals, even when there were fancier mics around.
Re: RE20 vs SM7B vs. something else
29I ended up getting the RE20. I had a Guitar Center gift card and was watching the used section hoping that an m88 would pop up. One day, a seemingly new RE20 showed up for $279 so I jumped on it.
Last night, I tracked some vocals on it and I will say that I am quite pleased. Very present and rich without being too "crispy." I often have that trouble with my vocals on LDCs. I love the fact that proximity effect is very forgiving on the RE20. I am inconsistent on the vocals and this mic is perfect for what I do (mostly scream and yell.)
next task is to re-amp some bass parts.
