I saw on IG that Mastodon was touring with a band named Ghost. I was tripping out on the picture of the singer in costume so I had to look deeper. I had never heard of this band yet they appear to have 10 billion fans and trillions of streams on Spotify. Found it cheesy and compelling at the same time. What do you think of this fantasy rock?

They're in that sweet spot of bands that I find pleasant/amusing but have zero attachment to and no interest in defending. If some diehard metal fan calls them 'false metal', they're probably right. They're fun, catchy, and kind of heavy. Not brilliant or important. Ultimately silly. Not crap.

There was a story on the old forums where an FM had worn a t-shirt from a motorcycle store (or brand?) called GHOST to some metal show (not Ghost).
He spent the night being informed by strangers that "That band fucking SUCKS, bro."
That cracks me up. I guess serious metalheads hate this band.

I remember when the debut came out on Rise Above records and they were really, really hip amongst the metal consigliere here in London for about 6 months (basically the same crowd who fell headover heels w/ Mastodon when they released Leviathan, funnily enough) - I was surprised that a pissy, wimpy take on King Diamond was being treated like the second coming, but whatever. And, as ever, the moment they crossed an arbitrary threshold of popularity, the cvlt crowd suddenly turned on them and denounced them as false metal. What a dumb scene.

I won't vote as I've only heard the debut once over a decade ago, but they clearly know how to play the industry game in order to cross over commercially as well as they did, I would never have predicated they'd get as big as they are now. Similar feelings (though obviously v. different music) about Volbeat.

"Ritual" still releases a ton of endorphins, as does the massive chorus of "Depth of Satan's Eyes." The uncensored video to "Year Zero" with all of the witch titties and Papa Emeritus peen is awesome and funny. I really wanted to like their cover of "Crucified," but it's too plodding and deprived of the camp in the original. Haven't listened to much past the first couple of records. They have some good tunes. Definitely not crap for how unhinged they make the kvlt krowd, no offense to anyone; for dudes in corpse paint who wear spikes and leather they certainly are a reflective bunch.
