Yeah, I agree. After doing some research I'm inclined to think the clones might emulate the sound well, but quality parts are what really matters. You can follow the same recipe to make a soup, but fresh vegetables are going to taste better than frozen; same with electronics the high quality parts are always going to sound better.TylerDeadPine wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 10:33 amLayout also comes into it in a big way - companies trying to make a lower cost version of something will most likely use PCB, jam everything together and beyond interference, they can get any amount of noise which then they might try solving cheaply/simply... that's when things start to go downhill. I will say when it comes to transistors I HAVE noticed a significant quality difference from vendor to vendor.Kniferide wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 3:28 amWho knows? The Warm clone does. My point is it's a series of caps transistors resistors diodes transformers in aa certain order. No reason a company can't lay those parts out In the same order and get good results. Modern component manufacturing Is vastly more predictable and reliable than it was when a 1073 was developed. Getting out of that circuit good amplification of low voltage signals is no huge feat nor should it be expensive to do so.
Mic preamps are all just fine.
Re: Golden Age Pre
12I would never argue that there isn't a difference in quality, but you can buy 5-10 golden age preamps for the cost of a high end version of a 1073. If that extra money is worth id is subjective.Langtry wrote: Wed Oct 12, 2022 11:35 amYeah, I agree. Re: Golden Age Pre
13Yep parts are better now!
