Travis Bean update:
I bought a set of nut files and brought down the action quite a bit and now it feels really nice. I also removed a bunch of brass on top per Dr Balls' suggestion. I could probably do more filing in both places but it's a high degree of "good enough" now and it plays as well or better than any of my other instruments.

Been playing it through a 70s silverface pull-boost Princeton. A kind of "hard" sounding amp that softens a little with a Balls Klone in front of it. I dig the clarity and it kind of has this shimmery sound unlike my wooden instruments.

May I suggest the EV PL35 as a cheaper and probably-just-as-good option? I've tried a bunch of tom mics on vocals and I like this betta than the Beta.
Ooh I appreciate the rec - I think EV makes a lot of outstanding mics that get overlooked, but unless I can find it used, I might "know a guy" who can give me a deep discount on the Shure to where it would probably be less than new price for that EV.

I think the main consideration for me is rejection of outside noise...maybe even more important than sound quality tbh. SM58 has a shocking amount of drum/cymbal bleed and really hoping to tame that as much as possible. Do you happen to remember if that EV has a comparable amount of rejection from the sides and tail of the pattern?

Now that I think about it, I have a few Sennheiser e604 maybe I should test this out.
