I agree with this for most of the sub 200-300 range but seems like there's tons of very good LDCs for much, much less than $800. Shure KSM32 probably best example but Audio Technica made some great LDCs for much, much less than 800 as well.

There were a lot of different ATs and admittedly no experience first-hand tracking w/ them but heard plenty of recordings made with them that sounded great. There was one model that outshined the rest and has been discontinued for quite a while now but I don't remember which one.

I have a couple of the Warm LDCs and have been very pleased with them as well. The WA-47 sounds exceptionally smooth in the top at least to my ear...but we're definitely straying away from the subject at hand.

Thanks for the heads up on that - I see exactly what you mean. Since 2 replacement/universal shockmounts are going to be about the same price what I paid for one of these mics, I think I'm going to stop by the hardware store & try to get some thin rubber washers maybe to try to get between those joints first? This has been successful for me w/ other clips and boom arms. It will wear fairly quickly so they do need to be replaced often if used frequently but even a thin metal or even paper washer would surely help beef it up. Sanding the black paint off & getting a rougher surface in there might help too.

Right on...I owned 4033s, a 4050, and 4041s in the early 90s - I bought them all pretty much at once at the recommendation of a professional engineer. Though the 4050 was a bit easier to stomach, it was still pretty harsh when used with instruments with critical transient information (cymbals/overhead and acoustic guitars). But maybe I had bad ones. It was a leap forward when I started using old-school AKG 451s and an AKG 414 TLII, as one might imagine would be the case.

I've heard good things about the WARM stuff.

they are the same design as the cheapo clips I buy on amazon for $12 and none of them have been a problem. rubber washer should fix any issues. the one I looked at from my monoprice mics seemed to hold just fine. if not, the ones on Amazon are fine and cheap.

I have like 6 of these and none of them slip.

Love the KSM32 I have. The Oktava 219s with the grill removed & body filled with RTV are totally useful

They sound like that, typical high end peak. They're not amazing great mics out of the box, but a good foundation for modding. The circuit is the same as the apex 460, tons of info on modding those out there. Capsule swap to K47 style can reign in the high end peak.
