WFH is for Bolsheviks.
I agree, WFH is very good.
The crusty boomer execs during 2020: "thank you so much for keeping our company afloat from your homes. In fact, we had a record breaking year."

Same execs in 2022: "we need you back in our office for some reason."

(probably worth pointing out the jobs I'm talking about are in fucking cloud software)

I'm currently "hybrid" and supposed to go into the office at least twice a week. I generally don't mind it; there are times when it's a nice change of pace and environment.

However, as most of the team in which I work (including my manager) are based in California or East Asia, there are other times when I get there, work for a few hours, say to myself "why am I here", and go home at lunch and finish working there in the afternoon.

At least traffic is still reduced as compared to before the pandemic.

Yeah. The few "itching to go back" types I used to work with found themselves going back to largely empty office buildings; even worse there was a 'smart' motion sensor lighting system so one could often be working in the fucking dark.

Whether companies like it or not, things are not going back to before times.

Huh. I've been back thru Chicago a lot more lately and traffic is still murder just like it always was.

In the city proper, I don’t doubt it.

However, commuting from the exurbs to the cluster of businesses around Deerfield and Northbrook, where most of the traffic is related to said businesses (with offices that are half-empty), yeah, it’s definitely still reduced.

Traffic in Austin seems worse than pre-pandemic, but then the population keeps getting bigger and bigger. My job ends on the 16th, and I’m tempted to find a WFH situation, just to avoid the roads. Nobody around here uses turn signals anymore, and I feel like I take a big risk every time I go out in peak traffic times.

Yeah, this is true. My last job that had a regular office environment, which I left in 2015, was a situation where I had clients across the country, and my immediate team members were all over the country, so it just felt like I was working with strangers. If I had camped out for work at my local coffee shop, there would have been more people I had meaningful interactions with.
