Side 1 Should Be Side 2

1
I’m listening to Iron Maiden’s Number Of the Beast. When I first heard it 38 years ago, it was from a dubbed tape that a friend had given me, not specifying which was Side 1 or Side 2. Given the title track’s intense intro, I figured that was Side 1. I still can’t accept “Invaders” as the kickoff.

Same goes for Big Black’s Atomizer. I have a hard time listening to it without “Fists Of Love” being first and “Bad Houses” being last.

Anyone else have this issue?

I was recently thinking about starting a thread to discuss the wonders of record sequencing, but this subject is more than sufficient.

I can't think of many obvious instances, but here's one:

I often listen to Joy Division's Closer starting with Side 2 and then Side 1 for a few reasons:

- Except for the etching on the inside of the record, there is no indication (e.g., on the album artwork, inner sleeve, or label) which is side 1
- "Isolation", normally the second song, is my least favorite song on the record (I know this is an unpopular opinion), and I prefer it later
- "A Means to an End" sounds like... it should be the end

Those would definitely be awesome openers and closers, though I would hate to relegate "Blackened" and "...And Justice for All" to the second half of the album.

I've thought about this topic more over the past few hours (because it's more fun than thinking about work) and am failing to think of other good examples. The practice of bands putting stronger material on side one is fairly consistent and as a result is more or less an expectation of mine now.

No way. Ending side one with the ballad and side two with the thrash banger is the Way of Things.

It made sense when I learned that 'ELO Kiddies' was the actual start, but felt more conventional by comparison. I like the borken version better.
This.
Was curious how that would even happen, and found this on Rick Nielsen's site:
The original vinyl record had “Side A” printed on the label on one side and “Side 1” printed on the other, a humorous touch reflecting the band’s conviction that they didn’t have any “B” material, although the placement of the track listing on the jacket seemed to indicate “Hot Love” was the first track on the album. Indeed, the matrix numbers on the record show the “Hot Love” side was designated side A and the “Elo Kiddies” side as side B. When the album was released on compact disc in the mid-1980s, it followed the same sequence. However, when the album was re-issued on CD in 1998, the band’s preferred sequence was used, with “Elo Kiddies” being the first track.
I eventually bought a vinyl copy but never noticed the label/matrix thing before.

Not quite the same, but when I was younger a friend would often lend me CDs of music he thought I'd like and I'd make copies. For some reason, my copies of Second Edition and Isn't Anything had some kind of corruption and a lot of the songs would start with 20 seconds to a minute of silence interspersed with some muffled distortion, but unique to each song so not uniform. Since I was young and thought these were "experimental" bands, I thought these were part of the record. I thought this for years until I finally heard other people's copies by chance.

You should reach out to Kevin. He probably has a prize for you that he's been waiting almost thirty-five years to give out.
