If you're using a board you can make as many stereo mixes as you have pairs of aux sends. Alternatively pro tools might have options to setup different mixes to different outputs (not sure, not a PT guy). Or possibly if your Motu has its own software with a matrix of all the ins and outs.

More expensive would be a full blown Furman system with separate modules each with their own controls so everyone can wiggle their own knobs.

Really saying this because I think it could be less of a headache. Record in Reaper. It is way easy to set up different headphone mixes, and get those mixes to physical outputs.

Now, accounting for that you probably ain't trying to hear that noise...

For starters, I'm going to assume that you've got some sort of a way to get something to power the headphones for each of those pairs of headphones. Like a separate headphone amp for each pair?

That's where I'd start. Being able to sort everything else won't be worth much without the means to power the headphones for those individual mixes.

Past all of that, I think that those 828 units had their own "Mix..." software. Maybe "Cuemix..."? Does that sound right?

If so, I'd imagine that said software could get you where you want to go while still recording the sources in question.

Cuemix will be the least latent way to make monitor mixes for sure. MOnitoring through a DAW will always have more latency (unless you are using a Protools HDX system or buffers so low that you don't notice.)

I've always hated Cuemix and the browser mixer for MOTU monitor mixing, hate looking to another screen to fiddle with this stuff. What I do is loop the inputs of my MOTU 16a (is done in the control matrix) thru to the line outputs of the 16a and those feed the line inputs of my little console. This way I use the analog aux of the console to feed a 4 ch. headphone amp and can make what ever mixes I want. Their is like 1ms of latency or less looping in to out internally in the 16a so there is functionally zero latency and I dont have to fiddle with another app screen. Not sure if you can do this with a 828 but if you have a little mixer lying around, It works for me.

This also allows me to use the faders on the console to mix what I hear in the control room. I choose the console main out on my monitor controller and then the main buss of my mixer feeds my monitors. in this mode the DAW outs feed a stereo channel on the console so playback comes into the console and can be feed to the headphone mixes for punches and over dubs etc. Also gives be Talk back to headphones which is handy AF. Little mixers go a long way and I'll never stop suggesting them.

Thanks for all the help, guys. I appreciate it. I'm pretty sure the cuemix part of my old MOTU is just shot. The whole front panel doesn't light up anymore or respond in any way. I will keep your ideas in mind when this old MOTU gives up the ghost and I have to buy something new.

I’m glad you wrote that because that is basically how I am handling playback with a Ferrofish 16/RME and a Midas board. There is a lot more info on how to use the horrible computer interface mixer than there is to get a setup like this going, so every bit helps.

I gotta admit, that seems easy and just what I want.

When I play my Gretsch G5230T, the little finger of my pick hand kind of rests on the pickguard, and if I'm playing fast, this seems to creates static-y noises through the pickups. Do I need to ground my pickguard? Insulate it from the pick-ups? Or just put on my big boy trousers and not worry the crackling? It's NOT a percussive sound - it's not my hand hitting the surface, it's more a crackle if the surface is rubbed - and the p/ups aren't noticeably microphonic. It's more of a kind of "bad connection" crackle, and if I make sure nothing is touching the pickguard, it goes away.

I'm just starting my Reaper journey after being forced off a platform I used for 20 years. So far any functionality I can think of is a quick search away. Now we'll see how long it takes me to get efficient on it. I'd give it an A+ for functionality and a B- for being intuitive, but that's probably how any software feels to someone making a change.
