Aside from the obvious benefits, would the Sony be an upgrade? Comparable? Or worse? Price seem reasonable?
No idea, as I have not heard either. they both seem to be sort of generic 80s plastic turntables - nothing wrong with that. maybe check the bearings on the tonearm to see if they are still good - that can make a big difference.

I would suggest replacing either the stylus or the entire cartridge on whichever you go with - old ones can start to go off after a while, even if the diamond is not completely worn out. and 10 years is a while.

I've had the JVC since the mid 1980s. I keep thinking it'll konk out completely, but it never does.

That PS-LX2 is silver (body is not plastic? unless you're referring to the headshell?) and the tonearm seems to be in decent shape, from my quick inspection of it. I guess what I'm wondering is, does it merit $50? And would it be a worthy replacement for the JVC?

Any Rega turntable users have issues with the tonearm lift wearing out? Over the last few weeks mine will sometimes not totally stick after lifting the tonearm up and it'll start to lower on its own.

Can I service/replace the lift mechanism without removing the entire tone arm?

EDIT: This is a P3-24 with stock RB-301 tonearm.

Rega is legendary for their commitment to after sales service. Most of their core products have a lifetime warranty. If there is a Rega dealer near you, take it to them and they should sort it out. Without having it in front of me, I could not say if the tonearm lift comes out, but on most tonearms, the hydraulic lift cylinder is held on to the tonearm by a small set screw. If you cannot get a dealer to help you, their US importer is ;

OK, for cheap, really cheap, you could grab a used Crown PA amp, or something newer but still used from QSC, Behringer, etc. All over Ebay for $200 or so. Those are pretty thirsty speakers at 87db efficiency, so if you need them loud, you need 100W.

For slightly better sound quality look for an Adcom GFA 545 or 555. Also all over ebay for around $300. They will sound marginally better than a beat to shit PA amp.

There are also a large number of cheap Rotels, NADs, and all sorts of crazy japanese amps from the 80s. Most of them still work, but who knows for how much longer?

there are doubtless a huge number of class D amps from china that claim to put out 100W per channel. Might be worth a shot for the prices (sometimes less than $100).

good luck.

Get an Adcom. They sound good. They are not expensive.
