Has anyone here dealt with squeaky/clangy hi hat stand noises before? Other than oil down moving parts I can't figure out where the sounds may be coming from. My hats are on the heavy side too, dunno if that's a contributor. Maybe it's always been there but I notice it more with quiet/subtle stuff these days. Here's what I'm using:

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1072Generally I tend to double-track and hard pan two mono tracks rather than have a single guitar mic'd in stereo. I find that kind of "opens up" the centre a little bit for other stuff, whereas putting a lot of true stereo stuff in the mix kind of feels more cluttered down the middle.llllllllllllllllllll wrote: Sat Jan 14, 2023 2:58 pm How often do yall record guitar in stereo?
I pretty much always have two to three different mics on the guitar, two close up and one backed off in the room, but they’re always mono, even if I spread them out in the stereo field later. I ask because my RME interface defaults everything to stereo and I am forever turning that stuff off
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1073I'm going to double down on this since it's been a bit since I swapped out the pots. For those in the back - Use 500K pots with the new Fender Cunife WRHB. 1M is too much, and I like Jazzmasters! If you are someone who likes a really clear top end on neck pickups (and you have 4-knob wiring), go ahead and do 1M for the neck ONLY. But 80% of people are probably going to prefer 500K on that one too. I'm blanking right now on what value capacitors Travis Bean used with humbuckers, but that is probably the best case scenario way - 500K pots with the treble bleed on the volume. I did that with Kevin's EGC bridge humbucker and it sounds excellent full volume and rolled off.llllllllllllllllllll wrote: Tue Jan 10, 2023 11:58 am Thanks Tommy. I’ve been wondering how those reissue pickups stacked up, and I knew you were familiar with the real ones.
I have a 12 string strat in pieces I need pickups for and thought those pickups would be a cool option. Even if they’re a little bright I’m sure they won’t be more ear piercing than a 12 string with roundwounds on a Strat bridge pickup

1074I've had one of the Novak WRHBs for a while and I'm about to do try that out with 1M pots (bridge pickup will be a Manlius Tele-sized P-90 deal w/ 500k.)tommy wrote: Tue Jan 17, 2023 3:15 pmI'm going to double down on this since it's been a bit since I swapped out the pots. I did have one of the CuNiFe reissue humbuckers for a minute and it sounded great w/ the 500k pots!

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1075How itchy are you to do this? If you wanna wait a little bit I'm going to pull the pair of 1M wired pots/cap (audio Volume, linear tone, w/ 0.022uF orange drop cap) when I get some 500K. I believe they are spaced at 2" and grounded together. There might be a little play if your holes are close to 2" apart.four_oclocker_2.2 wrote: Wed Jan 18, 2023 11:41 am I've had one of the Novak WRHBs for a while and I'm about to do try that out with 1M pots (bridge pickup will be a Manlius Tele-sized P-90 deal w/ 500k.)
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1076Trying to remove paint (not sure the type) from tolex and investigating solvents. I've tried naptha, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, an mineral spirits. The alcohol seemed to work the best but still not very easy. Am I missing something that I should be trying?
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1077Might have to use something a bit stronger that doesn't dry so fast, like citrus strip with a plastic grocery bag on it to keep it from evaporating. Maybe do a test patch on the bottom first to make sure it doesn't hurt the tolex.
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1078Word thanks. Searching the depths of the closet I found some Goof Off and some 3M "Safest Strip". The Goof Off worked the best so far. It's not my amp, just helping a friend out, so if he wants me to keep going i'll try and procure some citrus strip.Nate Dort wrote: Sat Jan 21, 2023 9:24 am Might have to use something a bit stronger that doesn't dry so fast, like citrus strip with a plastic grocery bag on it to keep it from evaporating. Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1079I used that citrus strip to peel paint layers off all my cabinets at my old house. Works really well, but mind the ventilation if you can. IIRC it takes a while but it did the trick better than other and the mess was more contained from the moisture.

1080GIBSON SGs
Cool guitar! Are there "good ones" and "bad ones"? Give me some advice on what sort of SG I should look for OR avoid!
