Guitar amp : source of distortion

All in the stomp box...almost.
I use a Roland DS-1 and a percolator for distortion, but i'm sure that the tubes in my Supertwinreverb are being overdriven from the output level of the pedals. This may seem a little too much for distortion, but i'm prone to keeping the volume on the guitar turned down to where there's not as much white noise. My amp is known for being really clean when loud and having the worst distortion of any amplifier ever... worst as in absolute shit. So i really have to rely on the pedals and the active eq to bring out a good clanky /clean/sustained distortion. Waffle factor- 666.

My favorite is all from the tube amp, but I've developed a bit of an equipment mismatch (Alamo really likes humbuckers while I'm using single coils, and the little Kalamazoo is too small to gig with), so I'm including the EH LPB-2ube in the signal chain these days. The LPB is also very nice for going direct to the hard drive, which I suspect I'll be doing more of in the future.

In an ideal world, though, it'd be P90s into a little EL84 tube amp for recording, a 6V6 amp for practices, and a 6L6 amp for live shows.

Tubes and Big Muff.
Whats wrong with white noise anyway?
I'd like to find a tube amp that runs on KT88s Ive heard good things about the tonal qualities about those power tubes, but I have my doubts.

the KT-88s, along with 6550s, are both prime candidates for my V4, when i finally get around to fixing it up. but i'm looking at those tubes specifically with bass in mind, wanting the extra output. four KT88's seems like a bit too much for guitar.
