Not missing the mark at all! Something like that is what I will wind up with. Honestly, will wind up with a modestly priced PAF clone. That ballpark just works for me. I just need something that isn't super overwound like the current pickups. There's plenty of options in the ~$80 per set range. Those Bootstrap pickups I linked above were even in that range for a full set.

I might get a guy I recently started hanging out with to bring his strat over so I can play it through my set up to refresh myself on what those sound like in a traditional SSS configuration. If it ballparks something I like, I can mod a decent strat pickup with one of those baseplates you can find online. Normal strat pickups sound plenty nice in the neck position.

Right now this is my couch guitar and will likely never be much more than that and something easy just to head to a friend's house to hangout or maybe test circuits in the garage.

Actually, that leads me to another question...

Any cheap but decent gig bags out there for relatively light duty?

It's worth noting that a traditional Strat setup doesn't have the bridge pickup on a tone control. I'm a single coil guy and I wire strats so that the bridge pickup has a tone control. IMO is NEEDS it. I roll my bridge tone off to about 6.5/7

For anyone with strats, I HIGHLY recommend the Fralin way of wiring with the master volume, master tone, and a blend knob.

I have a pair of these https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=16150, which for $25 are fine. the cable's really long, they're light and not painful to wear. I haven't used them for any critical listening, but they're my "I don't want to listen to coworkers talk about parking every fucking morning" work headphones.

I had a pair of their monolith planar magnetic headphones at my old job but they didn't let me take them when they canned me [PUN]. I don't think they sell the exact model anymore but they were ~$250 when they were new and I really liked those. You could choose open back or closed by removing a wood disk with a magnet. Open-Back all day for me...'cause then that fucker can really hear when you crank it up 'cause he won't shut up about his parking spot again.

I know this has been discussed before, I just don’t seem to be able to find the thread. our drummer left the band recently. we decided to play to programmed drums since finding a new good drummer around here will take forever. now we’re in the market for a pair of full range pa speakers. we already have two active HK Audio floor monitors but the rest of our pa is quite shitty. are EV speakers a good buy? there’s a set with 2 EV ELX 115 plus stands that seems affordable. any recommendations? we’d mostly use them for the drum track and vocals. would be nice if it has enough power tor small gigs. I do have a Crown power amp that I could use, so passive speakers would be fine.

Which ELX? there's the original ELX series and the more recent ELX-200 series that are current production. The original run was ok sound-wise but I have 4 of them and two of them have the same problem where they shorted out from something loose on the printed circuit board. Nate Dort actually fixed them once but the problem came back right away. I'm not sure I'd recommend them based on my experience unless they're SUPER cheap.

Honestly, the ZLX series has treated me and everyone I know that have used them much better and there is additional functionality on them such as treble/bass control and some DSP that shapes the sound in some way based on if you're using it on poles or in floor monitor position.

But yeah, if your drummer is in the PA, you should plan to get a sub with them, even if you're using 15s. These are super easy for non-tech people to use now as most powered subs will have built-in crossovers. You just take your mixer into the sub and then it'll send a signal to your tops that sheds everything below 100k (or whatever it's set at) and you'll feel the bass drum way more.
