Excuse the tangent, but I could not imagine being a grade schooler, or even a high school student in this Century. I used to clown on kids wearing pajama bottoms to school, but now I'm like with all of the shit you have to go through to receive an education wear whatever the hell you want. Be free, be a kid, because many forces are conspiring against your childhood. Props to the parents holding it together and the teachers for being inspirational.

Which sux, but it's true, both for the very rural areas and the inner cities. I don't know how many school districts supply laptops or pads to K-5 grades, but I expect it isn't every one of them.
This.

e-Learning day is a horseshit way of getting out of a school day. Either have school or don't, unless a hybrid schedule is already part of the curriculum.

All I know is that, here in Portland, I have a rare day off in the middle of the week because of all that stuff outside. I was on call and answering the phone pretty regularly until 11:00 a.m., and then I got to watch Man United vs. Barcelona, followed by this England vs. New Zealand Test match. Instead of working.

Unstated thus far is the number of “snow days” that are built into the school district’s calendar.

In the school districts I’ve been privy to in Illinois, a number of snow days (usually 5) are built-in. If you exceed that number over the course of the year (it has definitely happened in Chicagoland), days start getting tacked on to the end of the school year.

My hastily prepared zoom presentation will not do much to makeup for a lost day. Most grade school kids only really lock in if they have a number of things happening in the room to hold them accountable. It won't happen for most of them over wifi. If we have to close for 3-4 days I'll compromise.
Spouse of a teacher here. Kids shmids, teachers need snow days.

Get high, play Mario. Maybe get some lesson planning done since you're already working at home all the goddamn time anyway.

My 2nd grader's e-learning day lasts about 90 minutes, she almost always done by at 10 AM so it isn't like she is being denied a free day. General rule of thumb in our district seems to be if the school can plan for it, i.e. send kids home with their Chromebooks the day before then it is an e-learning day, if not then it is a snow day. They had two e-learning days this week, if it would have lasted until Friday then Friday just would have been a snow day.

In a way I am glad that the pandemic happened when it did, basically while she was in Kindergarten, even though it was a huge pain she hadn't really experienced school any other way so now she is perfectly happy doing either e-learning or in-person. My friends with kids even just a couple of years older seems like they had a tougher time adjusting.
