Re: Altec m11 coke bottle

I've never seen any schematics for the 526, but from pics I've seen it's just a 525a with a meter and an adjustment for mA I think. I'm not super familiar with the 518, but I know the connectors on the lipstick mics are different than on the Coke bottles. Maybe there's a way to adapt, but I'd need to study the schematics. I've seen the 525A paired up with an M11 too, but wasn't a good enough deal to take the risk on.

Schematic for coke bottle is among the info here:

Schematic for the 525a is here:

I'll look at these more tomorrow and see if I can find any other info. If it's a legit deal, you might ask if the 526 psu has the 4665 output transformer. Those sell for $500+ easily on their own and they're useful for lots of stuff. May make it worth it even if you'd still need to track down a 518.

I dunno man, looking at these, I'm sure it's possible, but not in their stock condition, and not without a specially made cable and/or some rewiring in the PSU. Looking at the schematics, they both use Pentode tubes and the voltages are close enough for government work, but both the tube wiring and the cable pinouts are different, and to make them work together you might end up altering the behavior of the mic. As for the output transformers, the TBB-103 in the 518a and the 4665 specs look comparable, so should be functional subs.

If they don't already work together as is, and you're not bent on being a tech, I'd pass. I'd especially pass if the 526a doesn't include the 4665 transformer.

I haven't really been following the going prices for Coke Bottle mics, so I can't say what a good price for a project would be. I know the connectors for both are hard to come by, but not impossible, so making a cable could be challenging.

Misha seems like a good dude from what I can tell, but before you pull the trigger maybe get a handle on whether this setup will actually work as is or if it's going to need a lot of effort/expense to get it working.
