We now have 4 of the ZLX12s for our PA. Two for monitors and two for sides and works great. I do a lot of demos with a drum machine and when our drummer can't make it, this system works totally fine for practice. We are also annoyingly loud (2 4x12s, 1 2x15, loud tube amps) If I didn't have a drummer, I would want a powered sub, but for temp replacement of a live drummer the ZLXs work well for us.

The original run was ok sound-wise but I have 4 of them and two of them have the same problem where they shorted out from something loose on the printed circuit board. Nate Dort actually fixed them once but the problem came back right away. I'm not sure I'd recommend them based on my experience unless they're SUPER cheap.

Honestly, the ZLX series has treated me and everyone I know that have used them much better and there is additional functionality on them such as treble/bass control and some DSP that shapes the sound in some way based on if you're using it on poles or in floor monitor position.

But yeah, if your drummer is in the PA, you should plan to get a sub with them, even if you're using 15s. These are super easy for non-tech people to use now as most powered subs will have built-in crossovers. You just take your mixer into the sub and then it'll send a signal to your tops that sheds everything below 100k (or whatever it's set at) and you'll feel the bass drum way more.
Thank you Garth and Owen for the recommendation! So if I had 2 powered Speakers and a single powered subwoofer I would go from mixer into the subwoofer and then out A/B to the 2 speakers with XLR cables? ZLX Series looks good to me! We’re rather on the quiet side so I’m sure we would be fine with a setup like this.

Yeah but if you're on the quiet side, you may not need a sub. That was more advice for a loud band. The newer ELX-200 series from EV though has a nice little 12" sub that I have a pair of and am quite in love with that might be nice to have one of though for some kick presence in the mix.

If you can afford to go w/ 15"s rather than 12"s though, you might get a little more bottom to them...? Although I think 12"s or even 10"s do a better job w/ vocals in pa configs so horses for courses I guess.

yes, exactly. If you do end up deciding to get a sub, most powered subs now have 2 different outputs, you'll one the high-pass outputs instead of the full-range outputs or otherwise you'll be sending low end to the tops too and that's usually not desirable.

Great, thanks a lot! I think we’ll get 2 speakers for now and can still add a subwoofer if needed. I’ll be using BFD3 for the drum programming so I’ll have a lot of bass drums to choose from. We actually did work on new songs without the drummer before and the sound was quite good!

Fralin Fralin Fralin. Fralin for Fender pickups is always a sure thing. E-mail or call them and tell them what you want.

I also used to feel the same about the stock tele neck pickup until I surrendered to it, but I’m sure they can get you situated with something outside of the regular kind

Fender 51 Nocaster set almost fills both of these needs (bridge is 7.18k though). It's what I put in my AVRI and love it. If they still make it. Bridge is slightly hot with lots of mids. Neck pickup has more high end than a stock Tele neck. But it sounds like maybe you want a really hot bridge pickup that is a little more less standard. In that case the Rio Grande Muy Grande has BALLS.

Overwound Fralin is also a good suggestion.
