Welp. This is absolutely fucking terrible...and completely ruins any plans I had to get rid of some things.
Yeah, I'm not exactly sure how it will play out. I did post a few things on Reverb since I wasn't able to move them elsewhere, but I have my original receipts for them should I need to show I'm not making a profit from selling them. It's like the only things I actually have receipts for, at least that were easy to find. Otherwise, I have no clue how I'd manage random sales here and there without having to pay an income tax on them.

I imagine the IRS isn't going to sweat small stuff like this and will mostly be looking for actual businesses and side hustles trying to skip out on taxes, though I could be wrong. God forbid they just tax the mega rich people appropriately. I imagine I'll stop selling and do more trades if this ends up being a thing we have to deal with (e.g. keeping receipts and such just so we can possibly sell things later).

I honestly don't know what that is going to entail in terms of filing taxes each year (do we now need to keep receipts to show we didn't have make any income from the sale(s)?) The way Reverb has it set up is if you hit the threshold, they will hold your earnings until you give them your tax information. Just something to keep in mind.
Ugh. That fucking BLOWS. Is that State or Federal? Illinois fucked Reverb up for us here. I barely buy off of it anymore because I get changed over 10% tax because I'm in Chicago. They even tax shipping. It has to be an excellent deal on a pedal or whatever. Because at least other places only charge me State tax instead of local tax. I've been buying new and demo pedals at a place that hasn't caught up to the charge IL tax thing. Keeping that a secret so I can keep utilizing it.

Well here's something you should NOT do: Don't sell your hard drive on ebay w/out wiping it first FFS.

Someone used this thing....and their whole digital life is on there with backups dating back to early 2000s. Wiping that shit now in case they were a fucking pedo or something. JFC.

OH And also don't take a HARD DRIVE, wrap it in one layer of flimsy 1mm foam "padding" (using this term loosely), chuck it in a box too big for its size & call it good. It's in an external desktop enclosure but not a rugged, portable enclosure so yeah c'mon my guy THINK

I've sold a few things before but I'm not an expert seller (or shipper.)

I'm selling a piece of outboard gear (not the 351s above) on eBay.
I packed the item (with bubble wrap) in a smallish box and then packed that box inside another larger box with foam/padding.
It's very well-protected.
The final package is 15" x 11" x 23" and weighs 16lbs.

USPS shipping to west coast (from NYC) is $129 which seems like quite a lot and I got a message about this from a bidder.

Did I select the wrong shipping method or is that just how much it costs to ship stuff?

Your mistake is probably going USPS. They're great for smaller things but bigger and heavier they get pricey. Try UPS or Fedex, OR try using the Paypal Shipstation thing as it'll give you quotes from both USPS and UPS:

As a reference I send amps via Fedex in boxes like 22 x 12 x 12 @ ~35lbs for like $50.

I finally bit the bullet and got a facebook account so I could list a bunch of stuff on marketplace. I've definitely had way more interest via FB Marketplace than I was getting on CL, even for the same items.

Had a rug listed, somebody contacted me at like 8 am and wanted to pick it up today. I told them I would be available before 11:30 or after 3:30, and they said they would contact me at 3:30 to arrange a meeting.
Around 10 am, somebody else says they want it. I said they could have it if they got here before 11:30, otherwise they'd have to compete with somebody else at 3:30. So they show up at 11:30 and take it, and I mark it as sold.

At 1pm, the first person messages me with "Is it sold? I thought I was picking it up at 3:30." So, I had to explain the concept of first-come, first-served to them, and that I'm not holding anything for anybody unless they venmo me ahead of time. Of course, Karen starts chewing me out, saying "sorry I couldn't drop everything and drive 45 minutes to get it this morning." like that's somehow my problem. Blocked.

Does anyone have tips on selling stuff to international bidders on eBay?

It seems like a good idea to open up auctions to anybody/anywhere but the international customs paperwork and fees could be a real pain.
Complainers, scams, returns, refunds, etc -- no thanks.

I remember (I think) fm Elisha saying he wouldn't sell/ship anything to Italy, period.
Does anyone have any hard yes/no, red lines etc?

I got domestic shipping down pretty well, this couldn't be that much harder, could it?
Just wondering if maybe it's not worth it.
