AH thank you so much, totally understand now!Bubber wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 1:31 pmIt's how I send that noise floor the rest of the way to hell, Garth.Garth wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 11:03 am could you elaborate on what process you're using here? If you're using outboard gear, what model? If ITB, which plug-in? And maybe a bit of info on your settings?
I have a few older Symetrix outboard compressors. One of the functions is a downward expander, so I bring the threshold to right around the noise floor and then bring the ratio up some, and fast attack, long release. It's just a gate with a more gradual (variable) dropoff, so without all the shitty choppiness. I don't think it would work as well if I were starting with crappy mics and pres, so I think I'm probably just lucky that these old boxes can work on it.
It's not as big of a deal when I'm not blasting the roof off of the preamps. They're quiet all the way up until they're not.

22What you describe is pretty much what I do. The mics are about the same distance from the vibrating top of the instrument, the "finger" mic is a lot closer to the string/finger contact point. Try the blue tape thing, it sounds dumb on paper but it works really nicely.Bubber wrote: Sun Nov 28, 2021 1:07 pm But here's something I am really curious about:Steve, are you referring to the plane of its top ridge running from the peak of the back face to the peak of the front face? If so, what I find surprising about that recommendation is that the upper (articulation) mic would then be farther back than the lower (body) mic, when the lower mic is more susceptible to getting blown out hard by that proximate low-freq sound. Am I misunderstanding?steve wrote: Sat Nov 20, 2021 10:09 amThese two should be equidistant from the top plane of the top of the body
Generally, I try to have both mics equidistant from the plane of the front face, which means that, since the bass is in a slightly reclined position, the upper mic is inched forward a bit in comparison to the lower one -- the opposite of how I read your recommendation.

23I will. Thanks.steve wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 3:57 pm What you describe is pretty much what I do. 24Update:
FM airloom might be right about this spaced pair of nice omnis as the way to go.
I pointed a pair of QTC-1s at it yesterday, the first time I've gotten my hands on a pair, and they feel like a real problem solver.
They're pointed maybe 30deg downward at about 5' high, maybe only 20" wide right now, 30" back, with an M160 in the center pointed slightly more steeply down at the upper body to hit a couple inches above the f-holes, and it just all sounds immediately ready to go. Excited to spend more time with 'em. I can spend some time adjusting position, but they've started out fantastic. Kind of shocking, to me anyway.

25If and only if you want to get 10% cooler, you can compress the omnis.Bubber wrote: Mon Feb 14, 2022 10:32 am Update:

26Today I learned that one of the most ripping musicians on the planet, Cailu the violinist from Taraf de Haïdouks, has got a group together and they've got a Tiny Desk concert up from Jan 2023. It's okay, but lo and behold, their bassist is sporting the finger tape.steve wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 3:57 pm What you describe is pretty much what I do.
