Automated assembly. There are machines out there that can bend leads and insert resistors into the PCB, so it's easier to have your jumpers be resistor-shaped so they'll fit the machine.

For surface-mount designs, 0 ohm resistors are used very frequently, for the same reason.

That totally makes sense...although some of the "magic" is now gone as I originally thought of it as more of a Funk Logic kind of design almost like a prank or secret super-inside joke. I reckon in Dr Balls case it still is though? Love it. ok magic is back

I read of TGP the carbon comp zero-ohm resistors sound best. Is that true?

Balls VIP-30 combo. The circuit is kinda like an AC30, but the normal and brilliant channels merge *before* the Vox top boost, kinda like a jumpered plexi (oh and no tremolo channel, either). Normal and brilliant volume controls to blend the two signals, full tone stack, and a *proper* master volume to allow adjustment for all use cases. 1x12 with a Celestion Vintage 30. Rock 'n roll dream machine.
