Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires

Yeah, I know I post about Lee a lot, but I feel the need to remind you that there's no more strident and sincere voice On the Left than The Glory Fires. The new album, Old Time Folks, is their best studio album so far.

Full disclosure, I was supposed to play drums on the UK/EU dates with Lee last spring, but life got in the way.

Lee writes such great lyrics, many of them tender portraits of Southern working class people of every color.

But every one of his records has at least one incendiary couplet that just jumps up out of the noise and makes it clear that he's absolutely LIVID.

On the album 'Youth Detention' it was in the song "Good Old Boy":
Bradford couldn’t pass; you sent him to a tutor.
Randy couldn’t pass; you just sent his ass to work!
On 'Old Time Folks' it's
They call him a planter, but he didn't plant nothin'
They call him a builder, but he doesn't build shit

When I was listening to Street Fight regularly*, they talked a lot about opening shows for him, him playing on bills with them and Trillbillies, that sort of thing. I listenee to a few things through them but never managed to buy any of his records. I need to correct that.

* Had to stop listening to Street Fight after Brett's third or fourth super-shit-take on masking at the beginning of Covid.
