Interesting. Weirdly, I'd never heard this before in all the pro/con discussion of flats. I haven't had a problem like that with bass flats, but they last so long that I might still only be on my second set, so not a great sample group. These were guitar Rotosound flats, a brand which no-one associates with great QC or durability. I swapped in an unwound G for now, as it was all I had, and will upgrade to Tomastiks next change. Daddario are dead to me, after having a similar failure rate to you - except mine didn't fail on fitting, but during the gigs they'd been fitted for.

Does anyone have knowledge/experience with modifying the dimensions of a TL806 or TL606 style cab? I've been thinking about building a TL806 or two but i'd like the long dimension to be 21" instead of 17.75" to fit under my head and look cool. The plans specify that it is a "1.3 cu. ft bass box" so is it as simple as changing the dimensions to achieve the same volume?

The interior volume on the plans is 10.5D x 16.25H x 13W = 2218.125 in^3 = 1.284 ft^3

Could you do achieve the same results with 8.75D x 19.5H x 13W = 1.284 ft^3?

You could make it as tall (or wide, since it sounds like you want to use it on its side) as you want, but just put an interior false wall inside to limit the interior dimensions.

I think your way would work, but 8.75" isn't very deep. I wonder if you might get some weird standing waves that would make it sound different.

Another consideration is the porting and how changing the shape may have an effect on the sound. For example, the bass/sub cabinets that are ported by having cardboard tubes on the back have pretty precise lengths to have them tuned properly.

The ports at the bottom of these do share SOME of that property, but are also somewhat open, especially along the back, so I'm back to *shrug*

The false wall suggestion is a good one but I would be concerned about creating a resonance chamber of some kind so if you go that route, I'd make sure it's well-dampened but also ventilated in some way so it can breathe or whatever, although that might just be me being fussy.

If you braced the dead space and filled it with insulation, or spray foam, it shouldn't resonate.

I did exactly this, and planned on making up the difference in dimension. I think I made mine 19" so not as drastic a change. They sounded just like I hoped they would - maybe there's a noticeable difference between true TL06 but I liked them AS-IS and didn't change
