I've never owned their stuff. Is it the politics of the owner or the quality of the gear that inspires your hatred?
Just looked up his politics. The questions around what the owner is doing make me happy not to own any of their pedals.

I don't have the receipts handy, but he's affiliated with an evangelical megachurch that does some extremely sketch anti-gay "missionary" work in africa. He might not be an "active" member anymore but from what I remember reading some/most/all of the people who work at JHS come through that organization.

I think he still refuses to give a straight answer about his own feelings towards LGBTQIA+ folks.

Given that the entire company is essentially a cult of personality built up around its namesake, I think calling his personal views on stuff like basic human rights is extremely fair game. It's not like he's just some dude who works at MXR.

yep, given all of that I'd say there's a >%50 chance there will be some expose-eh, that money from JHS gets funneled to sketch evangelical organizations as is their modus operandi.

also is MXR just the best cross section of value/goodness?

.... although I have wanted to try the multi Rat pedal. Maybe I'll get it used.
Everyone in the world sells a Fancy Rat these days. If nothing else, buy a clone of the JHS version, because he sure as shit either 1. put a bunch of well-known mods from the internet into a single box or 2. directly copied another boutique pedalmaker's hard work.

Totally. The deucetone actually looks pretty versatile. The Freakshow Brown Rabbit looks pretty cool too. There's probably 5 others I haven't heard of yet.

You could try the 1312 Distortion from Black Mass Electronics:
https://blackmasselectronics.com/produc ... distortion

"The 1312 Distortion is a famous three letter 🐀 distortion circuit with 8 different clipping options on a rotary switch. The 1312 V3 features an internal charge pump that turns your 9V supply voltage into 18V for increased headroom. You can use an 18V supply but you must change the internal dipswitch settings FIRST."
