I just did that now for my RME UCXII, and doing so made me realize that I do this quite a bit.

Not music gear, but I something all the time when I have to hook up computers or especially wall mounted tvs. I just cram my phone back there and snap pictures with the flashlight on.

LOL I did this the other day to try and remember what speakers are in a combo amp that is currently buried under a mountain of my girlfriend's sewing projects.

I did that at the radio station once and got knocked unconscious by an electric shock.

Mine is very sensitive to powerline noise - I use “Ethernet over power” devices for some of my home network, and I can literally hear data packets when the amp is on.

Hmmm. I’m not sure how concerning that is. I have no idea how solid state amps work so it don’t know the protocol for peeping around in there. Will do research first.

I’ve been lucky with no real power noise. The house it is in is well wired.

Anybody ever compare a Audio Technica 4051 to a Pro 37r? Is the 4051 that much of an upgrade?

I would guess different, more than better but I'm speaking from their reputation not personal use. The 4051 has a reputation for being warmer, er not as bright as most SDCs. What would you like to use them on? Also worth wondering if you ever need more small diaphragms setup at a time that would more easily justify splurging on one than looking to see if one's objectively better.

That makes sense - I basically just use the Pro 37 as a foil to accompany ribbons, dynamics, or large condensers for acoustic instruments, amps, and percussion. I have an old smallish bodied acoustic that the Pro 37 sounds wonderful on for finger picked stuff. It sounds exactly like you’re sitting in front of that guitar with minimal fuss.

Lately I record 2-3 channels at a time and don’t have any other small condenser mics, just the Pro. I confess I am a little bored with just having the one option, but to your point, I probably wouldn’t really be missing out if I just kept them.

Maybe I’ll just hold off on the 4051 for now unless a specific need comes up. That’s $350 I could just put towards a M130 or second M160 instead.

What do you use to record your shows? I want to get something that is easy to plug into a sound board.

A little UA or Focusrite interface could do the trick with a laptop. You'd be unlikely to get more than 2 channels off the board as most live consoles don't have direct outs.

Be warned that live soundboard recordings tend to have weird balances, especially in modest sized venues. The board mix will be vocal heavy since the PA wouldn't need as much of the amps and drums since they're putting out more stage volume.

Alternatively you could get one of those Zoom recorders with stereo mics to capture what the folks were hearing on the floor. I wonder if they make one with direct ins as well so you could try each method.

Many of these things will take a second stereo line-level feed and record it on separate tracks from the built-in stereo mics. I've got a 12 year old Tascam thing that does this. Makes it easy to mix all 4 tracks later.

The Zoom H4N has two XLR ins and does exactly this. We used mine to record a live set from our practice space (COVID era stuff) and it came out pretty decent. I'd recommend one these little handheld guys as they are so easy to use and built for just this kind of thing. Best live sound you can get? No. But for something you can just set and forget and get very decent results they are great. I've had one of the H2 variants, and this H4 one and both were/are great.

Said vid. In addition to the onboard mics this had a kick mic and one just kinda pointed at a PA speaker for vocals.
