Yeah, agreed. And unlike some other A24 movies it's not overly esoteric (for lack of a better term coming to mind) but it definitely still has some depth.

For me the imagery itself wasn't all that scary but some of the plot implications (I don't want to spoil anything for anyone) were quite horrifying... the most disturbing stuff was what they didn't show (or didn't show a lot of).

influencer was pretty bad.
I did not enjoy any of those movies, sir, with the exception of the British anthology Ghost Stories. I found it moving and creepy. Influencer was unbelievable in the literal sense of the word.

Watched Clock the other night. It was OK. Kind of heavy-handed.

Last night I took School's Out for a spin. Eco-horror from France about a group of disturbed but intellectually advanced high school students, and a substitute teacher sent to mind them after their previous teacher attempted suicide in class. I wasn't sure where it was going and still had questions afterwards but enjoyed the trip. Relevant.

I also watched Hereditary for the second time. Creepy flick. Probably my favorite from Ari Aster, but what I could never understand is why Annie forced Charlie to go to Peter's high school party. She had to have known it wasn't actually an innocent "bbq party" like he erroneously claimed. And if it was some passive-aggressive way to punish Peter for going to a proper high school bash, then what does that say about her love for Charlie using her as a pawn?

Regardless, heavy movie.

There is also the infamous 1980s Night of the Demon. Really low budget, but its a wild film featuring a really pissed off Bigfoot.
I've seen that! The thing I remember the most was a creative kill featuring a sleeping bag.
Night of the Demons also introduced me to Bauhaus! Respect.

Finally watched Night of the Demons. Fantastic title card sequence and dope Bauhaus dance segment, but the rest kind of bored me. I was expecting creepy and surreal 80's horror vibes with a liberal dose of camp a la Phantasm, but mostly got a lot of camp. Lots of boobies and butts! Got me thinking what if today's horror directors called for gratuitous T&A in their films: Ari Aster asking Toni Collete to step out of a shower; Jordan Peele requiring Keke Palmer to ride a horse bareback and topless; Mike Flanagan putting t&a riders in Kate Siegel's contracts, etc cetera, peter cetera.

I did like Rodger's - the sole 80's black friend character - desire for survival. He bounced at every opportunity 😆🤣 That's how you survive as a black person in horror! Fuck the dumb shit! RUN!

One of my favourite horror memories is in Rec 2* when the kids, laughing and joking, break into the house, but there's this realisation or feeling that it's not funny and there's something seriously wrong. Also the cop barricading himself in the bathroom and committing suicide out of hopelessness. Straight out of nightmares.

Maybe it's all changing though. I'm aware younger directors are upsetting things.

*I admit, bloody in parts, but it's not the central focus of the scares

Modern explorations of Frankenstein are having their moment. I really enjoyed the performances from both actors, especially from Marin Ireland - I kept getting Angela Bettis vibes so much that I was sure I was watching her.

Have you read the news about the guy who had spent thousands of dollars on a realistic dog suit? This Norwegian love story adds mystery, shock, and horror to that human interest segment. I really liked the first half of this movie, but after everything is revealed each character resorts to committing horror movie sins, the most cardinal of which is not killing the fucking villain after incapacitating them. Come on, man! That said it's still a good, uncomfortable watch. Kind of worried about my sanity because I thought the ending was darkly comedic. Send help.
