Re: Cake vs Pie
22Also, there are restaurants in east Asia that serve raw chicken. Intentionally.
I have not tried it.

Pardon my ignorance, but are there cold chicken restaurants?
I have not tried it.

24I miss my grandmother every day, but I miss her the most when I think about how my brother and cousins would throw hands over the last slice of her pecan pie.
Waffles for apple pie or cooking apples at all, nasty shit

Re: Cake vs Pie
25Is it true that in the US, pie is only a sweet thing? No meat pies or any of that kind of pie? I'm not sure if that's true but I think I remember encountering Americans having cognitive difficulty with meat pies.
Re: Cake vs Pie
26Meat and other savory pies are around, but yeah, most Americans would assume you meant something sweet. But chicken pot pie, for example, is common enough.Anthony Flack wrote: Wed Aug 23, 2023 5:25 pm Is it true that in the US, pie is only a sweet thing? No meat pies or any of that kind of pie? Re: Cake vs Pie
27Pie, though a really well-made cake is wonderful. An average cake, on the other hand, doesn’t tempt me in the slightest, whereas an average pie will.
Pie has to be pretty bad for it not to still be pretty good.
Pie vs donuts, though . . .
(The funny thing is, I don’t have all that much of a sweet tooth.)

28A Serbian-American colleague of mine used to bring in meat and cheese pies from the old country for breakfast every now and then. Fucking fantastic. But, yeah, otherwise not common.Wood Goblin wrote: Wed Aug 23, 2023 5:36 pmMeat and other savory pies are around, but yeah, most Americans would assume you meant something sweet. 29I went to a conveyor belt sushi place in a provincial part of Aichi prefecture, Japan, and almost ordered the medium rare chicken as it trundled past. This was cooked on one side, scored and seasoned on the other. 10+ years on, I still regret not trying it.jfv wrote: Wed Aug 23, 2023 4:15 pmAlso, there are restaurants in east Asia that serve raw chicken. The minced raw pork sandwich in northern Germany is just OK. The raw beef slices in lime juice at some Vietnamese restaurants are great, though.

30Yeah, I’ve been in multiple situations where, like.. hey, you wanna eat this?? And I was like, huh??? But there was something in me that was like, well, this is a civilized place, how the hell can they stay in business if they are getting people seriously ill???biscuitdough wrote: Wed Aug 23, 2023 11:05 pmI went to a conveyor belt sushi place in a provincial part of Aichi prefecture, Japan, and almost ordered the medium rare chicken as it trundled past. Nope, still can’t pull the trigger. Have had plenty of raw fish, beef… can’t do raw fowl.
