What would you get if you you wanted to plug a bass into a pedal board and then 1/4” into a high impedance input on the front of a mic preamp? I think the key here is the impedance with a ground lift.

I’d like the device to also be useful for impedance conversion and normal reamping as well.
If i follow, you want to go

Bass>Pedal Board>AMP but also take a paralel into the Hi IMP of a Mic Pre amp after the pedal board and have a ground lift?

I would just plug the Pedal Bard into the Di, take the thru out to the amp, and use the low imp XLR out of the DI into the actual XLR in of the mic preamp. Not that there are not other ways to do thing, but I would say that that is the "correct" use of a DI in that situation. The Hi Imp input of a Mic Pre is in function, just a Di in, but there is no way to lift ground there usually. I'd skip that HI IMP in all together.

Getting a step ahead here but you will need to phase align those. Most probably do it ITB but yes: Radial makes an actual box for that too.
Melda Productions AutoAlign plugin is pretty fantastic at doing this task, especially good at aligning multiple kick drum mics.

I’m happy to drag the waveform to align it. I do it all the time already. No biggie.
mdc wrote: Tue Sep 19, 2023 11:25 am I might be misunderstanding what you're asking for, but basically any DI box? You could also just plug right in from the output of your pedalboard and see what happens - worst case you'd just need some kind of pad or a pedal with the volume turned down if it's blowing up the input.

There are some bass preamp/drive pedals (sansamp etc) that have DI/line level output built in, so that could be a good $$$ option too if you're in the market for some pedals anyway.

I'm not sure if a DI+reamp in one exists, but if it does I imagine Radial makes it.
I realize I haven’t been clear. I think I need a passive stereo DI to accomplish what I want to do (by connecting the two XLRs connectors together and using the 1/4” jacks as input and output) and it’ll have the bonus of allowing me to do stereo keyboards (hooked up differently) as well anyway.

Basically I want all three functions in a single box. If it has a polarity switch that would be bonus but not required.

1) Ground lift only - no change in impedance, no change in connector

2) Convert high impedance 1/4” to low impedance XLR, with a ground lift

3) Convert low impedance XLR to high impedance 1/4”, with a ground lift.

I could do this with regular passive DI if I wanted to have to access the back of the preamp balanced inputs and unplug shit all the damn time. I’d like to use the convenient front 1/4” inputs when I want to do this though!

Nice! I manually drag tracks too but never feel 100% confident about it. Kick mics are pretty easy to see with a visual spike (more complex in the grand scheme though) vs. bass tracks, which can have odd looking waveforms.

I bought Sound Radix Auto-Align 1 last year. Auto-aligning is super useful.

Yeah. For those on the cheap that don't want to buy a plugin for it, in Reaper if you put 2 tracks in a Folder track, you can see both waves imposed on top of each other in the folder track display. Great for sliding around.

I have been going the cheap-o route with my instrument cables and since I am playing out again, I need something a bit tougher. I am not really interested in making my own, but do you find it worth spending a little extra to get a nice instrument cable. I was looking at the rattlesnake cable company and they seem like good folks with a good cable.

They are absolutely great and Hank's a good fella in a good band called Magpies who've played BBQ a couple few summers back. He'll custom make you one to your exact specs.

The only criticism is A.) while the weave adds toughness to the cable and a cool look, it can be very slippery if you step on it, especially on a slicker floor like hardwood and B.) they also coil a little harder not as bad as coax but getting to that ballpark and C.) he sends more emails than Sweetwater if you don't opt out

Exactly what I wanted to hear. I thought I remembered they were at least PRF adjacent. Gonna give their snakehead for board to guitar (which is the cable that always seems to break). If I dig it I will get a standard one for amp to board. Thanks!
