It's our election on Saturday and although we are no risk to anybody but ourselves, we're on course to elect the most right-wing government in my lifetime because inflation is up, so vote for the other guys. If you have a halfway sensible government, well that's obviously the problem, let's change that and see what happens.

And my mortgage payments are way up too, so don't think I haven't suffered from this war in Ukraine just as much as anybody - we all have. But surely there comes a point where we can take no more? It is time to stand up, and sell lots of weapons to Saudi Arabia so that I can buy a boat.

i'd say we are fine for the immediate term. ask your local military friends to let you know when they go to fpcon charlie or delta.
I'd generally agree with you that the US military would know better how close we are to armageddon than, say, the media.

But, shit, US intelligence apparently didn't know about this attack by Hamas.

Or did they?

Fuck.

I'm going to continue to try to worry about other things than the end of the world, otherwise I'm prone to just sink into deep depression.

Well Israeli intelligence is supposed to be pretty rock solid so some people are asking questions about how they didn't pick up on this.

On top of that, Egypt warned Israel that something big was about to come from Gaza, but apparently was ignored. Cui Bono?

From a distance, this seems like watching two really old bigoted men fight over a bowl of soup. Like if Archie Bunker met his doppelganger nemesis, and he had a South Philly accent instead of a Queens accent.

This will never end. We'll be living in 3023 in fucking space stations in geosynchronous orbit with space elevators going down to our native regions and they'll still be skirmishing over this plot of land that's only half the area of Chicago, over a concept of nationhood covering an area slightly larger than the third largest county in Oregon or California. The only scenarios that could possibly end this would be: complete eradication of one by the other; climate change rendering the region uninhabitable; the earlier mentioned asteroid, or maybe secular women taking over and gelding all the men of their history, religion and guns.

I think we'd be surprised how much less intractable this situation would be if the economy wasn't dependent on oil from the Persian Gulf. All this terrorism and blowing kids into bits is intimately connected to Iran and Saudi Arabia and the Ukraine war and OPEC, weapon sales, global inflation and who wins the next US election.

Ordinary people just want to be able to live their lives. Although I can't imagine what it would do to somebody's psyche to grow up in Gaza and know that your home and family could be blown up at any moment. I just heard a Gazan resident on the radio this morning whose young daughter told him not to worry about the sound of the missiles, because they won't hear the one that kills them - "other people will hear, but we will already be gone". So chillax, dad.

Hamas don't care about the people of Gaza; just like the 9/11 attack, their objective is to provoke the most brutal retaliation. They want Israel to commit terrible war crimes, and Bibi is all too happy to oblige. Biden can't risk a fucking Russian asset taking the White House and the Republicans are corrupt enough to let that happen, so Biden has to do his part to satisfy American bloodlust.
