I am frightened to see where this thread goes now.

Perhaps it will end up with some leather patches ripped from the elbows of a college professor's tweed jacket!

I'm surprised you didn't point Bradley towards that stalwart of French engineering, the Citroen 2CV:

Yeah, he'd probably have better luck with that car than anything Jeep has ever made. I know three people with the newer Grand Cherokees-those trucks suck pretty hard. If I remember correctly Consumer Reports named that vehicle as least reliable overall for the past few years. They state that 91% of people that own one report major problems.

brad, that's a fine looking vehicle. aesthetically speaking, i dig it. BUT.

#1, it's a jeep. aside from their terrible service history, tendency to burst into flames, and other such common complaints, it is the malfunctioning of a jeep that caused the death of one of my best friends a few years back. all these factors combined leave me with a position of "i do not like jeep vehicles". i've only ever known one person who owned one to really, really like it, rather than complain about it's incessant service requirements.

#2, it looks a lot like a maybe cooler-looking version of my 4runner, which looks like this

and of course the 4runner gets rave reviews from just about everybody, i personally know of multiple folks who replaced their 4runner with another 4runner when they thought it was time... they have a great service record, retain their value well...

as far as gas mileage, i can't say for sure, but i would guess they're very close, with the 4runner probably being a little better based on my assumption about the age of the vehicle you've shown, which appears to be rather old, back from the days before things like safety, aerodynamics, and mileage were understood as well as they are today.

more character, no doubt. but in the battle of form vs function, i almost always choose function. that being said, i would never own it. but i can't say it's crap. it's cool-looking and certainly charming. i'm not the guy who looks for that in a truck, but to each his own.

I used to have a 4Runner. I destroyed it by rolling it a couple of times. I hadn't intended to do that.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer can be a good vehicle -- and not just by comparison with the glued-together-popsicle-sticks standard of your typical Jeep. But whatever. I don't have any strong feelings about them.

What intrigues me is that the Grand Wagoneer has more than its share of cultish devotees. There are people who love these vehicles, probably more than I've ever seen people love any other model of car. Of course, loving a car is stupid and creepy, but you get my point.

My brother was also telling me that Grand Wagoneers have also developed a strange cache among certain elite social circles/high society. Weird.

toomanyhelicopters, I was very sorry to read about your friend's death. I'm sorry for bringing up a bad topic.

Wagoneers had a 360ci v8 motor. Compared to a 4runner with the v6, the mileage is crap. Another consideration is that I really doubt this thing has fuel injection, and that makes a huge difference in both mileage and reliability.

However, I gave this thing a not crap, largely because it's ugly and can probably drive through a large stack of flaming barrels without incident.
