This band are terrific players and have an amazing work ethic...but none of their music has stuck with me. And stylistically, it's very paint by numbers - everything I've heard by them sounds entirely like something that came out before with nothing much new. If anything, their ability to switch styles and genres without really developing their own identity makes them the hippest and most capable bar band in history.

I had a Big Black Tools tee which I used to wear out while cruising. Got a lot of action. Conversations rarely got steered towards the band, and I didn't really need the shirt.

As others have pointed out, the name. It's just shit, and even worse it reminds me of Jim Morrison. Already I've got my back up.

The music I've heard, well it all sounds different, but it all seemed to share that same "no such thing as a bad idea" philosophy to me. Meaning it all sounds like songs you wrote on a day you didn't manage to come up with anything good but kept plugging away anyway, adding more stuff, substituting complication for inspiration. I don't know, maybe it doesn't ALL sound like that, could be there's lots of good stuff in amongst the fifty albums they released since last Tuesday. But what I have heard sounds to me like a bunch of technicians who have all the ability and equipment but can't write a song, never found their sound, can't decide what the band is good at and just flail around. Like Pink Floyd stuck in Ummagumma mode forever.

I could be wrong. I'm just basing this on a half dozen pieces or so that I have checked out, all of which could have been by different bands, none of which made me want to hear more. It's nice that they get to do whatever they want though. Surely by blind chance alone they'll hit on something fantastic one day... or not? Obviously there's plenty of people who do get a kick out of it, but I can't say I've seen any real diamonds emerging from all this rough.

Just listened to part of 4 songs: an annoying 80s metal song, an annoying 60s garage rock song, an annoying 70s funk song, an annoying 60s psychedelic song.

wtf This band BLOWS

If you've ever had an interest in seeing what this band is like live but didn't want to get the total experience with like, other people, they are livestreaming most of the shows on their current US tour free-of-charge on YouTube. This weekend is Red Rocks and The Gorge is on the 14th, and those are historically shows where they pull out all of the stops, play obscure stuff, ignore curfew, etc. The sound quality is great and it seems to be about a three-camera setup they're using. The shows are also available to watch later, and a few days after each show the soundboard audio is also being released, with a promise that they'll be including the stems in the future.
