The boy and the heron aka how do you. Beautifully animated and very dense and rich in metaphor film.
Whisper of the heart. Slow and peaceful film. Subtle masterpiece??

Yes.
Re: Movies you have watched thread.
483Saltburn was boring, shabbily written, and Barry Keoghan (who I think is a terrible actor) put in his worst performance to date. What a pile of fucking shit. Me and my housemate kept waiting for the "shocking" scenes people alluded to but there was basically nothing.
It's a Talented Mr Ripley ripoff with the level of writing of a drama student. The writer/director comes from money and is a nepo baby apparently. Makes sense with how much people are raving about this load of crap. Wtf.

485Only squares clutched pearls at the bathtub scene, but I could see the other "shocking" scene upsetting some folk who think they've seen it all. I was actually surprised it was the bathtub sequence and not the graveyard one that sent gums flapping. But, yeah, nothing shocking, and overall the film makes the working class look like dicks. I like Barry Keoghan though. Enjoyed him in The Killing of a Sacred Deer.andyman wrote: Mon Jan 01, 2024 7:01 pmMe and my housemate kept waiting for the "shocking" scenes people alluded to but there was basically nothing.
Justice for Dexter Wade and Nakari Campbell

486I guess Barbie was made for a certain audience, and I'm not part of it. I only laughed once or twice? By the end, I was starting to fall asleep.
"Whatever happened to that album?"
"I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall and it like, shattered."

487I thought it was good, and strange, until the drawn out ending, which told a story that should have been obvious by then. It should have ended in the coffee shop, Elspeth walking out with her flat white.rsmurphy wrote: Sun Dec 31, 2023 10:46 am I watched Barry Keoghan connive his thirst trapping ways through Saltburn last night. Too much gum-flapping about the bathtub sequence and not enough about the graveyard. Overall I enjoyed it but unsure if I was all about it. Love to see boring rich people get what for but it offered nothing new, even in terms of outrageousness.

488I actually thought it was going to end on a more sour note with the way the director teased the scene before the dance sequence.enframed wrote: Thu Jan 04, 2024 12:00 amIt should have ended in the coffee shop, Elspeth walking out with her flat white.

489Saw The Boy and the Heron. It starts out really promising, has beautiful animation and attempts world-building on par with Princess Mononoke or maybe even Spirited Away, but kind of loses its direction in the second half. It turns out Miyazaki's co-founder died halfway through production and he didn't work on the film for a year, causing the film to change direction. I think it's understandable if it's not the masterpiece people wanted it to be. It's still very pretty and funny at times, and given that he's 83 now about as much as we could ask for at this point in his life.
Still definitely worth watching.

490I started Elvis and couldn't make it more than a half hour.
The weird, evil, predatory relationship Colonel Tom Parker had with Presley is a fascinating story. For some reason this director thinks we need everything to be a jump cut, mash up, drone shot cut away, or we'll stop paying attention. So annoying. I want someone else to start the project over.
Also Tom Hanks should only be allowed to play Tom Hanksy characters. He's not up for it as a character actor. The accent is too inconsistent.
