Same for me. I woke up to a text message from another FM delivering this terrible news. I immediately wanted to go back to bed. I saw him for the first and last time at a Come gig in London over a year ago, and my inner teenager was slightly awed. there are very few people who can make any meaning out of writing about music at all, and for me he was absolutely one of them. critical reading for me growing up in the 90s, always-on politics, fresh bracing thought in the midst of the inkies talking all their silly shit. we never met. the 'eastern spring' book (zero) opened my ears. and i liked the moonbears very much. rip. hurts.

Exactly the same age as me, which I only discovered after reading his anniversary piece about The Slider in TheQuietus (link) back in 2012. Absolutely gutted. Still working my way through Neil's end-of-year-rundown substack, and can't quite believe it. He lost his wife about 5 or 6 years ago, and now this...his girls must be absolutely numb. In case anyone's interested, a GoFundMe is up and running to help his family out in the short term...
