$80
MXL ribbon mic for the Stupid Deal of the Day. Every time I buy one of these ~$100 mic deals from mf it just sits in the box, so I’m out. Plus I’ve got like a million repairs to look forward to.
Here’s someone from Gearspace going on about that particular model vs another. No clue who that is so ymmv
I have owned the R40 and still have a pair of the R144. They are, in fact, the
exact same Microphone. The R40 was the "Branded for Musicians Friend" OEM version of this mic so that gearspace thread is hilarious. I dropped and broke my R40 and replaced it with a pair of R144 a couple of years later cause they were a blow out on some online store and I got the pair for about $99. Same exact microphones. They are really dull sounding mics, but have a pretty cool mid range and extremely extended proximity effect. Not too bad as drum overheads, but really mid-rangy like an old funk/soul LP or something like that. I actually like them in front of a kick drum cause they have a tone of subby low end there and I don't care if they get blown out since they are almost free. Worth buyi8ng to play with if you want a super dark mic to pair with a bright mic on a guitar cab. I have also put one inside the washing machine with the lid open across the room as a "weird room" mic while recording drums and actually used it in a track. If you want a ribbon to abuse this is a choice. More fun than a 57 if you are trying to experiment. The newer pair of 144's have held up pretty well and are still kicking.
I love seeing when someone on Gear Splutce goes all in trying to nerd out about a thing that is absolutely not a thing at all. He probably just had a broken mic.
