Just started Mr and Mrs Smith. I know Glover is too smart to simply remake this garbage storyline, but early episodes are a bit underwhelming so far.

It’s worth sticking with. One of the best of the year so far. Hiro Murai’s work is usually top shelf.

Coherence, on Kanopy. Kind of a sci-fi/horror (non-gory). I fucking love low-budget sci-fi. Apparently there was no script, actors were give notes daily on the story arc, but they made up the dialog as they went along. Totally worth seeing.

Tokyo Vice season two is available. It's just solid good.

True Detective. Watched seasons one and four, both good.

MrsEaster and I have a real soft spot for Tokyo Vice. Some of the writing is bad and some of the acting is a little weak, but it's still really enjoyable. Evokes a time and place incredibly well. A joy to look at it. And it's more ambitious than a lot of recent TV. The main character is mostly unlikeable, but that works to its advantage. And the Japanese actors sound way less stilted when speaking in their native tongue. The yakuza dudes obsessed w/the Backstreet Boys ring very true, even though the book upon which the show was (very loosely) based is supposedly mostly bullshit. I think the wife and I are also way into it b/c we've lived and/or worked over there during the 1990s. And I find Rachel Keller's character to be rather easy to look at.

I had mixed feelings about the first season of True Detective. Liked it much more when it wasn't trying to be action-packed, and the police buddy-movie cliches that snuck in there didn't really work for me. Still, we kept watching and it passed the time. And McConaughey did a fine job of balancing simmering expressiveness and utter ridiculousness. The show also made effective use of pulp and sleaze.

The new True Detective stank as far as I'm concerned. Stank. No Melvins, Wu-Tang or Sleep needle drops either. That is all.

We've been watching Six Feet Under on Max. I had never seen it, but I always figured it was a dark comedy. There is some comedy, but it's mostly family drama. I'm enjoying it.

Six Feet Under was/is great.
