I have just recently aquired a Blue "Kick Ball".
Pretty Cheap mic ($119). I was having no particular luck with it sounding any better than any of the other mics i have, but it has this lil switcheroo on it that allows for different EQ curves. All was not so great untill in frustration i ditched the mic stand and just threw it in the bass drum on the pillow, front more or less toward the beater (it is ball shaped after all) and it was actually really great sounding. As that was a good sound, if a lil on the attack side, i will next try a double mic situation with the ball inside and close to the beater, and a tube mic on the outside (i have been using an AKG Solidtube on the outer head, with a dual role in also fattening up the Drums themselves... I have a smallish kit, a gretsch 4 peice with an 18" bass drum).
Not a bad choice at all, for the cost, and with the switches you basically have a good "ball" (the other dynamic ball mic) as well as a bass mic.
