Battle of the popular dynamic kick drum mic choices

I have just recently aquired a Blue "Kick Ball".

Pretty Cheap mic ($119). I was having no particular luck with it sounding any better than any of the other mics i have, but it has this lil switcheroo on it that allows for different EQ curves. All was not so great untill in frustration i ditched the mic stand and just threw it in the bass drum on the pillow, front more or less toward the beater (it is ball shaped after all) and it was actually really great sounding. As that was a good sound, if a lil on the attack side, i will next try a double mic situation with the ball inside and close to the beater, and a tube mic on the outside (i have been using an AKG Solidtube on the outer head, with a dual role in also fattening up the Drums themselves... I have a smallish kit, a gretsch 4 peice with an 18" bass drum).

Not a bad choice at all, for the cost, and with the switches you basically have a good "ball" (the other dynamic ball mic) as well as a bass mic.

I have a Shure Beta 52. It is very puffy sounding. Hard to get a kick sound I really like with it. It is either way too sub bass sounding with not enough attack (when outside) or super basket ball sounding when you shove it inside. Last time I recorded kick, I ended up using a EV n/d 408 inside on a pillow and a 12 speaker plugged in to a DI outside. It was better than anywhere I put the Beta 52.I have used a M88 a few times (but only live) and liked it a lot. Sounded good right in front of the port.I have an RE20, but I suspect that it is broken because it distorts even with a loud vocal. I have heard Kicks recorded with them and liked it, but mine is turd.I like a PZM in front of a kick. I like a speaker in front of a kick. Some LDC can sound really great in front of a kit. I used a LDC at Djimbes studio once and liked it a lot but cannot remember what it was. It had a Fat mode. Sounded good.
