Re: Wowza in Kalamazoo's new single and album

Well that is sincerely sweet of you all (I hope you know, Brendan, Brian, and Josh, I respect and love your music a lot). I play the Fauxsrite album a lot to this day (and Brendan and Josh, I think you know how much I respect your music and albums).

About the cell phone, and I swear to god this isn't some "ah shucks, golly-gee" false modesty, but I have failed so hard at figuring out both Garageband AND Audacity. Like to an embarrassing degree. I used to really love using my 4-track for demos, but that shit the bed on me.

I've got something like 200 songs done on my phone using the Spire app., and I don't think I'll ever change that approach, at least for demos. Every song for Out and Wowza and every other project I'm in that starts with my demo is there. Not sure I'll make another album this way, but for demos it really is the best thing I've used. It's free, too!

This is probably like a caveman trying to explain quantum physics to most people reading this post, but it really is all in the feel of the thing and how far away my phone is from the source. Sometimes I get a good take and it is VERY HOT and VERY SIZZLY, and that's a decision to make there then I guess. I usually keep it. The built-in compression sounds cool to me, but that's an aesthetic choice all the way. I asked a friend for a first listen and they said it was kinda sizzly at times. I appreciated that but ended up keeping the high end. I also mix with headphones, which I'm sure is a bit no-no. I am usually doing all this shit while my family is sleeping.

Garth said the same, but again, I kinda like how fucked it sounds at times. About Garth's mastering, I think that made a really lovely difference, even just past trimming drum clicks or long silences at the end of tracks. Garth has super great ears and I encourage flooding his inbox with mastering jobs (mostly because he's good at it, but also because I like making him super uncomfortable!). Get that dude in the sauna and make him SQUIRM.

Probably should have put this in the tech room, but I can't hang there too long without my eyes getting blurry.

NOW! In spite of using my phone to make this album, I want to say that we finished a record in Studio B this last week and I have ever, EVER heard a recording I've been on sound that perfect. I swear to god. Eliya was riding the faders and setting up the mics, and holy fucking shit, I couldn't believe what was coming out of the speakers. Kind of a shocking moment. So what I mean is, I would prefer to record in a studio, but I'll do whatever.

Like that Centro-Matic song goes, "Songs above sound."
